Anorak's Corner / Starter motor question.....
« on: May 23, 2021, 02:57:24 PM »
Hi all, quick question, went to test the starter motor before refit and nothing and after disassembly I find this situation in the body behind the battery terminal on the housing. Are these two supposed to be together and attached to the back of the thread held in my left hand?

Not been into one of these before and a little unsure. I’ve ‘soldering fettling’ tackle so not phased just not sure on proper assembly, any advice would be more than appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Hiya,

thanks for the reply, Youre headlight is different to mine for some reason and after tracking it down with a pal at Honda it turns out that it came off a 1970's CB200..........Who knew? Apparently they were fitted on the first run of UK bikes as alternative through supply issues in the factory from the listed ones which are  the same diameter and never logged, I wonder who else has one of these?

Anyway, mine presumably has been modified back in the 80's to accept the bulb that I found in it when i dismantled it and as Im not familiar with these as never had one before Im struggling to identify things that aren't standard which is why this has thrown up such an issue.

I ordered one of those bulbs when I saw the original post and was a little deflated when I got it out of the box and realised its a completely different fitment.  I was on the understanding that it was an unmolested bike but I guess lads back in the late seventies were as bad for fiddling as we are today!

Anyway, my issue is that the headlight bowl/bucket, whatever has the original transfer on it from the shop that sold it which, as it happens, is the shop i bought my first bike from back in 1991 and want to keep it on there with some other time ravaged bits to keep it's history.
If it were not for this I would simply get a new headlight with an uprated bulb if this wasn't the case. Whether I get a new glass and reflector or adapt the one I have (if possible) via a fitting ring or whatever, I don't know but I need to do something as a lighter would give off more illumination than the standard excuse for a bulb that was fitted by the factory:D

really appreciate the help and the reply but I think I need to keep looking dont I :(

CB500/550 / Re: The Cost of A rebuild!
« on: April 18, 2021, 12:09:51 PM »
Who cares what it costs? We do it for the love don't we?
I'm probably £2,800 into the 400/4 with about another £1800 to spend on the pipes and paint and a few other bits like tyres, consumables and the wiring but its saved me going bonkers in these awful times and like you all say, at least you can take it for a ride when you're done and feel as proud as punch with a massive sense of achievement.

Whether its holidays, cars, bikes or horses; if you can justify the time and cost (no matter how high or low) just go enjoy yourself!

I read that it was a REG REC thing and recommended to purchase a new REG REC unit more suited to a lithium battery. This ones 40+ years old and I was going to buy a replacement and don't mind spending the extra to keep the battery as is required. there's no flashy wiring on this just a bog standard replacement as motogadget illustrate. My looms toast due to its age and I wouldn't trust it. These bikes appear to be fairly simple so up for a challenge and fancy doing it to this great little bike.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a wiring novice hence all the questions, I just want to make sure I get what's right for what I intend on doing.

I'm with you on the YUASA, I've the same YT9BS in my VTEC that IK bought it with back in 2004, I think it might be  a record contentder..........and the original reg rec!

I need a thin one to mount on its side under the new seat pan so I was looking at the Antigravity ones. Sam that's a bit of a steal isn't it? Let me know what the verdict is when you get it in terms of robustness (if that's a word), only as I intend to mount it on is side. Top info though, cheers. Where did you order that from?......
