You've ordinarily got most conditions (as stated) going against you to initially fire petrol into combustion.
Full choke and "priming" may not help in this instance. With the plug and whole combustion chamber metals cold, along with ingesting damp cool air, then the mix is difficult to propagate a flame front fully so it snuffs itself rather than advances. As soon as you get even a modicum of heating and normalising combustion conditions the problem will reduce.
You could try initially cranking it with no choke and listen for any firing, then without stopping turning it over, start to bring the choke in slowly to see if that catches it.
This is just trying not to overwhelm the air with too heavy a fuel load initially so that the cold mixture is moved more toward "dryness" to favour getting it to light up. A bit like holding a newspaper across an old fire place to get it to draw 
I like the idea of cranking with progressive choke actuation. I agree with your combustion theory as the engine catches with full choke on no problem but just doesn’t seem to pick up, it’s almost feels like a flooding scenario

My 500 four K0 starts on second kick in summer but does still need choke.
I don’t really use the bike in the winter but went to the other day and getting it going was an ordeal after it had stood not run in a cold and damp garage for around a month.
I have tried the priming trick, various combinations of throttle position etc but it’s just a pain to start.
Once going and not even fully warm starts on the button.
Carbs are fully rebuilt Gerben units, no air leaks, float levels all bang on.
Fitted with Boyer ign and micro coils.
I have just ordered some new plug caps in case some damp etc is affecting them.
I have tried altering the pilot air screws 1/4 turn either way but no luck.
Is this hard starting just down to not being started for a while and is this usual ?

Dont know if anyone has spotted this but my m8 is selling his really nice 4 as he wants to buy a Jota. I have personally seen this bike and it is immaculate in all aspects, I know he has a high reserve on it which may be a bit high but this is a very nice bike with some real provenance. Apparently was owned originally by the founder and president of the Honda Owners Club UK. He owned the bike for 34 years from 1972 to 2006. Itwas then bought by the Senior Technician at Moreton's Honda in Altrincham who was also a very active member of the owners club. Personally am all for it overall but like many see this as a massively overambitousnplanndesigned to make the gov feel smug. All electric will happen eventually, after all fossil fuel,supplies are not infinite.
What worries me is what will happen to the classic vehicles, these after all are a part of our history and should be preserved for road use. Maybe we will have to hang out and night on street corners to score fuel from a neighbourhood dealer 😂😂😂
I will probably be near a box or in one by then but my son is desperate to inherit my four.
Like all gov plans all laudable but not thought through. As many have said it’s the charging infrastructure that’s the big stumbling block.

I volunteer at our RSPCA and have just refurbished a pan AK-KO ride on mower we were donated (much fun and a longer story).
I need a starter battery for it and wondered if any members have a old one knocking around that is not totally goosed.
Currently it has a NP 7-12 battery but it has rubbish CCA rating so although it starts it once it doesn’t recover fast enough to start again. Either that or it’s just duff (I am no battery expert).

I'm curious as to what you did in what order. I understand adjusting the idle air screw but what did the rebalancing consist of - was it adjusting an individual slider height?
Rebalanced carbs using a proper vacuum gauge set and adjusting each slide height. All as per the Honda maintenance manual.

Anyone tried SBS ceramic pads, got them on my CB1300 and they are fantastic, great bite, don’t wear the discs like sintered and very little dust. Work well from cold as well unlike sintered and resist fading unlike organic. Fairly sure I checked that SBS make them for the 500/550 but could be wrong.
When mines ready for the road I’ll certainly be fitting them if available. Just checked and they are SBS 501HF
Good to know Ken, just changed mine for ENC in an attempt to stop bloody brake squeal which didn’t help. One of these days I will lose the squeal.
