Quick question.
Finishing a 400/4 build that's being going on for years.
What is the best brake fluid to use?

The manual recommends Dot 3 mineral based, but there is no reason not to use the latest Dot 5 silicone fluid, and a couple of good reasons to go for the silicone. First, it won't bugger the paintjob on your tank if you splash it, (it actually makes it shine!) And best of all, it's not hygroscopic, so doesn't let moisture and rust form in the hydraulics.

Dot 5 is OK if its a totally clean and rebuilt system but it does not mix well with "ordinary" fluid

Rebuilt my 400 brake earlier in the year using silicone fluid with no problems evident. Flushed through with meths and airline before any silicone based product introduced.

I assumed that was the case with the bike in question, coming to the end of a long rebuild.

+1 on the DOT 5 if you have a clean system. With a new caliper, master cylinder and hoses, I filled my rebuilt 400/F from the bottom (with a new pump-type oil can - apparently, one of the few disadvantages of DOT 5 is some difficulty in bleeding) and it's worked a treat ever since. Took all of five minutes.

Yes brake system is completely clean so I will go with Dot 5
