Re the front frorks, I pulled the springs out the top and they are complete, I havent dissasembled the forks, but
yea the springs stick out of the top of the forks about an inch when the tops are off, which makes me think maybe it's been lowered.
It has rubber gaiter things over the legs so thats evidence of front end tampering i suppose.

It got an advisory on the mot regarding the corroded mudgaurds. they are scrap really but as long as they dont drop off onto the wheel theyl do for now.
I oiled up most of the dry rust areas, I may paint it if I keep it long enough

Managed to get the rear shocks working now. I oiled the stem and bounced them a load. they have gradually started working again.
The bike is now MOT'd and roadworthy. I patched her together with a temporary fuel cap, got that master cylinder thanks to yoshi823.
not sure whats happening with my front forks but they are completely collapsed still. maybe yea its tired springs.
I removed the top covers and the fork spring stuck out of the top about an inch.

I used gaffa tape to patch up the rear mudgaurd  ha ha

Yea I'll do that, I have never seen rear shocks collapse like this. I suppose the bike could be fitted with 125 shocks or something, and maybe they
were too weak.
I would like low rear shocks, Have You seen this one?

It's lowered at the back with some posh rear shocks by the looks of it. I haven't got the dosh for this but it would be nice to get some like that

Its quite interesting that I was toying with the idea of lowering it anyway. It seems to have lowered itself  :D :D

It's lowered itself but now there is no suspension. And I reckon the forks are an MOT fail as they are.

I have had another chance to look at the 400.

I noticed that since last time I worked on it (1st time since collecting it off ebay) The rear shocks have collapsed. They have squashed down completely.
I get the impression that they may have been weak ones from another bike added for the purpose of the sale.
Has anyone encountered collapsed rear shocks before?

Also, I have worked on bikes for years but I have never tackled front forks before. I noticed that my forks when compressed they make an air squirting noise.
Also they do not spring back up. I.E when compressed they stay down, and when lifted they stay up. The chrome on the legs is in good shape.
Would the fork seals cause this lack of strength in the forks?

I got the diaphragm for mine from DS.
whilst gouging out the rubber goo I realised it has oozed into the cylinder. then the rubber boot part slit and came off.

I could get a repair kit for mine but thats 30 quid. then it's 30 quid for a complete aftermarket unit.
I know where I can get a 250 or 200 one for less and was hoping to do it on the dirt cheap.
I may come to you for that master cylinder, Does it have the guts in it?

CB350/400 / 2 questions regarding exhaust and brake caliper
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:51:15 AM »
Hi there

The diaphragm in the front brake resevoir I have had turned to goo whilst the bike sat with no fluid in it. I think the goo has oozed into the master cylinder.
david silver seems to have 1 month waiting list on this part.
I whonder, does anybody know weather it's ok to use a front brake resevoir/lever/master cylinder off any other bike? For example a honda 200 benly.
Cheers

Also, would an exhaust from a cb 500 or 550 fit onto the 400 four? or are the diameters and spacings different?

Cheers thanks

I wanted to get on the road asap with a budget bike as I am short of money, these seem to go for comparitively low prices in this condition.
I was hoping to just fix it up mechanically and get the mot.
Later on I would like to mae it look nice. I'm into the customised type of bike so I thought I may try some sort of mild customisation.

I always seem to end up with bikes that have something slightly unusual about them that stops me from mollesting them too much. Like the c90 I got, It's a green one. green = rare.
and my previous bsa b31, which turned out to be the much rarer b32.

this bike seems like a fairly standard no frills 400 four tho  :)

Hi there

I have joined the other us site, But I'm joining here also. Here's a pic of the bike after some tinkering has occured

Whilst working on it I have blown the fuses. I have no more to find out what went wrong/repair the bike.
I went off to maplin's to buy some fuses, easy I thought.

They said Yea we have loads of fuses, which size?

Then it turns out none of the many fuses they have are 7amp or 15amp  >:( >:( >:(

It's only a couple of fuses, I suppose I have to order them from an overseas interweb stockists and pay through the nose or somethng ???

I went to a local motorcycle shop and they only had the car type fuses, and the local bits and bobs shop only had ceramic plug fuses.

Where do I get 7 amp and 15amp glass fuses, Or is there another rating I can get away with? It's frustrating when there's only one day every 2 weeks with time to fix the bike and it's ruined by something so simple as a couple of fuses ha ha

Thanks for any help.

Hi there
I joined the US forum and thought I would join here for more UK specific questions etc.
Here is the bike I got, An old Honda cb400 Four that has been sitting for yonks.

I got a new ignition for it and a battery and it ran eventually. I'll post about it in the apropriate sector.
