Brown wire goes to the small bulb in headlight in uk which is not fitted in us, unfortunately it is a requirement to have an "obgliatory" light in uk and would fail mot if not there plus if you got a knowlegable plod( both words in one sentence) it could be an offence. Depending on light size there are plenty of units out there.
Green and red may be neutral switch to idiot light wire

This is just a guess but the two at the front could go to the switch on the clutch lever so it will start in gear if you pull the clutch, not sure about the single one that looks to be same colour. Have you got a wiring diagram?

Only thing to add to that is that in design they take into effect that a ball bearing hates sideways load and will fail quickly if this is applied unless specificaly designed for this with different, expensive, races

I have been known to do similar but at least using stainless, the part number may give you an idea of length, not sure.
On cmsnl it gives 90044377000 as the part number and says 6x47, looking at parts diagrams tells you a lot if you search before asking!

A lot of the time the old copper outer exhaust gaskets set like dark concrete and look like part of the head taking severe prodding and levering to remove, many times i have found 2 gaskets in the hole!

Ted, you have just completed something a younger mechanic would fail at mate. By the way the chain whilst new was not an expensive one

On the 550 the switch is on the oil pump so after it is main gallery to filter. I have seen bad primary chain wear on the gallery to filter but not yet one worn through

If it is ok with no shoes fitted and done up tight it cant be bearings or brakeplate. It is possible that the shoes are too wide, you could put a smear of coloured grease( coppaslip comes to mind) on the edges of the shoes and see if it transfers to hub or brakeplate, i have also had shoes where they dont sit properly on the cam as they are fractionally too wide, you said you had to thin the hole end so leave springs off and see if the flat pads sit asquare on the cam.
We are at the mercy of the manufacturers and suppliers of pattern parts who dont seem to take as much care in manufacture. When available i always use Vesrah, they seem to be a better maker

Ted i think that was one of 3 i had relined by Paul in Huddersfield when he was doing them. As far as i know he used cast iron pipe not brake drums and did do them to smallest size. It was a long time ago so maybe a bit of corrosion, i would use a flap wheel in a drill to clean out the drum.

Yes they can, and were, back in the day we had one with a bent crank and taking the chance that it was maleable cast we had an approx 9 inch long bar turned so that an internal taper locked to the crank with an ht allen screw then carefull "whacked" the end with large hammer whilst clocking the bar on a turned portion concentric to the taper. We got it to within 1 thou of concentric and the engine ran fine for as long as we had records of it(years)
