I'm thinking there is probably some sort of non-setting putty type compound, that would withstand the heat, a little of which added to the screw would make it tighter.

I bow to your experience Trig. I'm quoting from the John Wyatt book again.

I note that the oil adjusting screw is quite loose and I'm not convinced it will stay as set, when the front sprocket spins up/down rapidly say for example if an engine was reved hard in neutral. What might I do to hold it in place without locking it?

Thanks for your kind offer Jamesh, I have today appealed to DS for a new set of bolts FOC, if not forthcoming perhaps we can make a swop.

Thanks AshimotoK0, I'll study the subtle differences of a K0 wheel so I know next time I buy one ......nothing Dear. I've been working hard to get the bike really correct and this is quite a set back. £405 plus postage for a new K0 hub, plus lace up/rebuild is hard to find and justify when '...who would ever know anyway....". Don't know if I'll ever be lucky enough to find a cheap scrap one, especially as it would need to be like new to match the rest of the bike.

I'll most likely go with changing the bolts. Trouble is, I'll know and it will irritate me.

With the help above, I have established that my front hub is of the narrow K1 type  :(

Moreover, the six bolts that hold the brake disc to the hub are of the long (106mm) type – Part Number: 90122-300-010, which only just clear the bottom of the fork leg as shown in the attached picture and are probably not holding the brake disc securely.

The reason for Service Bulletin #26 is to avoid just this situation.

A set of the correct bolts are available from DSS, at a little over £50 (similar price from CMS). As I purchased the bike from him perhaps a little discount can be granted or maybe a new K0 wheel  ::)

Yes they all had a chain oiler, but prior to E1026144 it used a felt plug that could not be adjusted. The latter oiler provided a screw to adjust the amount of oil (screw in to reduce), though of questionable effectiveness. I've got mine screwed right in to see if the chain drys.

Yes, I got the logic wrong, the latter K1 is supposed to be smaller, but not across the spoke flanges.
I will use the 86mm provided by AsimotoK0 to measure mine though I may need to drop the wheel.

I’m hoping that my CB750 K0 has the correct front wheel fitted.

According to Service Bulletin #26 the width of the front wheel hub was reduced by 4mm for the K1.

My front hub is 65mm when measured across the outside of the top flanges as shown in the attached photo.

If I have the correct wider hub, then a similar measurement on a K1, k2 etc. should be 69mm.

Grateful if anyone would confirm.

Hi Trigger,

Thank you for the description and photos showing the cut away and crankcase mounting point.

The sprocket cover on my bike does not have the cut away. It is as the one on the right in your photo.

I understand that, when the 18-tooth sprocket was introduced the case protector was deleted and a chain guide rubber (that mine has) was also added. It therefore seems logical not to fret over the absence of a case protector.

Your help in reaching this understanding is much appreciated.

Hi Trigger,

Thank you for your knowledge and advice.

Attached are two pictures of the gearbox sprocket cover, on which I can see nothing to mount a sprocket case protector.

I note that my bike (E1036***) has been upgraded with 18-front and 48-tooth rear sprockets, introduced at Engine number 1044805. I also note that it has, as expected, the 'so called' adjustable chain oiler, introduced at E1026144, on the front sprocket. I imagine the sprocket case protector, that was introduced to cover the previous 17-tooth sprocket, may be too small in diameter to cover an 18-tooth?

Whilst trying to make my bike perfectly correct, it seems only sensible to retain the 18/48 tooth set-up and avoid disaster!

According to John Wyatt, my 1970 CB750 K0 (Engine Number 1036****) should be fitted with a case protector (Part No: 11353 300 010) around the front drive sprocket, but it isn’t. Apparently, the front sprocket cover was modified at E1026144 to accept the case protector. I’m thinking my sprocket cover may be from an earlier bike, though I can’t find any pictures to show how they differ. Grateful if any of you could enlighten me.

Hi SOHC Jedi, Thanks again for prompt and knowledgeable response.

Fitted a new 8mm dia. breather tube to rear of gearbox and connected it to the lower connection at the top of the oil tank. Then added another tube to the oil tank top connection and routed it to the side to avoid any possible oil on rear tyre. But just-in-case pushed about 5cm of sponge up the open end.

Routed the camshaft breather pipe to the opposite side, away from tyre, and pushed another bit of sponge up that open end.

Hope to give it a run soon and not find any oil in the sponges. I’ll let you know.

Hi SOHC Jedi, Thanks very much for your prompt response, which makes good sense.

Vent from rear of gearbox to lower oil tank connection, passing through the mini-internal tank and then to atmosphere through the top connection, thereby separating oil from air.

Presently, the vent from the cam shaft cover is just a tube with no oil collector. Whilst I have only noted a slight mist from this tube, it has no form of oil/ air separation, venting directly to the road, which might play on my mind when heeled over on a fast bend. Do you know if there was any oil/ air separation for this pipe on the original K0? I’m a purist, but happy to fit an aftermarket filter to save my skin!

Hi, On my 1970 CB750 K0 I’m confused about two connections to the oil tank, these are the smaller connections at the top and back. Removing the tool tray reveals the top connection, which points up and is bent back over. The other is hidden below and points down. They are shown on a diagram of the lubrication system (attached), which includes a cut-away view of the oil tank, revealing that they both connect to a ‘mini-tank’ within the main oil tank. I’d be grateful for definitive advice on where these points should be connected to. I suspect the top is connected via rubber tube to the crankcase breather and that the lower may be for the rocker cover breather or to atmosphere.
