Title: Cleaning engine cases.

Evening all. Was going to wash my bike over the weekend and was wondering how to clean the engine cases. It’s sort of ingrained dirt/ oil on them. Was thinking autosol or will that scratch them?

Assuming you have given it an initial wash to get the grit etc off, WD 40 is an excellent cleaning agent for oil based grime. I’m sure others will be along for additional tips.

If it's really ingrained, the chances are you won't be able to remove the staining by normal cleaning methods. That's why we have all engines acid dipped to remove the impregnated oil from the alloy. But, a very good traffic film remover will clean the general dirt and crud off.

Thanks Greg and Julie. To be fair It’s probably just general grime so will try the wash and WD40 method first. Thanks once again.

Who does your acid dip Julie, and do they do paint stripping off tanks?

No Roy, they only do engine cases etc.

Hi Julie. When you say a traffic film remover would that be Gunk or similar?

I haven't used Gunk for years but have heard its not as good as it used to be. If you have a motor factors bear by, like Euro Car Parts and such like, go along and see what TFR they sell. Something like this would do.
