CB500/550 / CB 550k3 Electrical problems
« on: August 21, 2023, 10:58:59 AM »
Hi
As I mentioned in an earlier post whilst turning left onto my drive , the bike cut out and it all went dead.
I have just managed to get time to start investigating, the battery was only giving out 7 volts, so I have changed that and I have checked all of the fuses none were blown and I now have just over 12 volts at the main fuse, but nothing at either the headlight or taillight fuses.
When this happened about 5 years ago it was the ignition switch, so I have disconnected the switch and inserted some jumpers into the wiring harness plug for the ignition switch, no difference. I have also ensured the kill switch is not in the off position,  I have tried the lights, indicators and horn, nothing.
Before I start stripping the wiring harness to look for a short, can anyone give me an idea of where else I can check, or indeed has anyone had the same problem?

Many thanks
Dave

CB500/550 / CB 550K3 wiring loom questions
« on: June 20, 2023, 10:04:26 PM »
Hi

For the second time in two years I have had a total electrical failure on my K3 ( US import), the first time I had to replace the ignition switch and a wire in the wiring loom under the petrol tank as it had shorted out. I had the same problem in the late 70's when I owned a K3, that was the mechanics who changed the fork seals routed the harness incorrectly on reassembly.
I haven't started to trace the fault this time yet, but I am thinking of biting the bullet and changing the main wiring loom, hence some questions:

1) Where is the best place to buy a new loom from, I live in Gloucestershire, I'm sure somebody told me a while ago that there was a guy in Cheltenham who makes them up, has anybody used him or have any contact details?
2) Are the looms on the DS web site any good for US import K3's?
3) Can I change the main loom without totally stripping the bike down?

Many thanks
Dave

Where's My Old Bike? / LTR770Y CX500-ES

Hi

Has anyone seen this one around, it was the white Euro Sport edition, I bought it in 1994 and used it for travelling backwards and forwards to Germany. I owned it until about 2000, I see on the DVLA web site it was SORN'd in 2011

Dave

Looks like a nice bike, but the advert registration date ( 2002 52 reg) doesn't match the number plates 1972.

Hi
When I did mine about 4 years ago the V5 turned up the day after the notification letter, but my local Halfords did let me use the notification letter to get the registration plates made.

Is it me or is the write up a bit confusing as to what is there and what is missing, perhaps I'll read it again.

CB500/550 / Re: DSS exhausts for a 550K3
« on: September 23, 2021, 05:30:36 PM »
I bought a set of these from DSS and I'm really pleased with them, as Bryan said you will need the original brackets and some nuts etc.
I had all of these from the original exhausts, there was only one problem, the bolts that are attached to silencer part of the exhausts had also been chrome plated in the build process, I  phoned DSS and they checked all the others they had in stock and said they were the same. I bought a cheap tap and die set to effectively clean the bolt threads enough to get the nuts on.
Other than that, excellent.

Hi

As promised here are a couple of photos of my 550K3 (originally US spec) side stand. As you can see there is a couple of mm gap between the side stand and the exhaust.

Hi,

Mine is a 1977 spec K3, if it is dry at the weekend I'll get out of the garage and take some pictures and measurements.

I have just checked my K3 and my side stand is also touching the exhaust pipe when it is in the parked position. To be fair I very use the side stand, when I tried the side stand with the bike on the centre stand it appears there is a bit of lateral movement around the bolt which probably means that the bolt hole in the frame is worn. I may disassemble it this weekend and have a look.

Hi

I took all three locks in and the locksmith found the number and cut the keys from that.

Hi

About 3 years ago I got mine done at Gloucester Locksmiths (01452 306824) cost me around £8 for a pair of keys.

Hi,
I own a 1977 CB550K3 which was originally registered in the US.
At 4000 revs in top gear it is doing 50mph.
