CB500/550 / Re: 550 breaking down intermitant
« on: April 12, 2011, 02:10:21 AM »
thanks for all the feedback lads
as i did try another set of coils with their own caps didnt think it could be caps but im goint to check this out anyway you never know the remote possabilities that the other set being second hand could have a faulty cap stranger things have happened.
and will check out the kill switch and a direct pos wire to coil never thought of that.
If the problem was their all the time it would be easier to find but as it does it intermitant makes it harder
some times when its happened ive gone straight home so i can check it out but by the time i get home has stopped playing up.
One of those problems when i find it i will never forget these symptoms in the future.
I will report back on tests i do
cheers

well the missing is completely intermittant it might do it warm or when i first get on it sometimes and then doesnt do it at all for a few  rides when its not playing up the motor seems good through all the rev range. seems to be happening more often over the last couple of months. Normally happens when im just cruising then give it a bit of throttle and it acts like its running out of fuel and if i dont give it a good throttle on it won't come out of it for a long time. When i 1st  put the pods on i jetted it up then a had to lift the main needle one notch and adjust the pilots, synced the carbs took a while tinkering to get it running good. ive rebuilt a few sohc,s over the years but never had this prob before have tried new plugs number three has always been a little darker on the plug that could be a number of things nothing major i hope . ive pretty much eliminated fuel delivery problem i think and been inclined to think maybe electrical eg  have tried another set of coils with the same result. so maybe power to one of the coils. electrical can be hard to diagnose with out correct equipment, as you said (just like our women) chuckle
the carbs are screw in main jets

CB500/550 / Wire harness
« on: September 07, 2009, 05:21:22 PM »
need some info on harness
i have a 1978 cb550k has the horn button with the PA button
i can get a new wire loom for K- k1 pt No 321000-374-000
but 76 model pt No is 321000-374-700
and 550f pt No is 321000-390-000
cannot seem to find pt No for 78 model is the difference just incidental things like the additional PA button if so is it easy to add additional wires to the new loom

CB500/550 / Re: distance collar for 1978 cb 550
« on: July 25, 2009, 07:38:01 AM »
thanks Bryanj
i worked out its spacing between bearings would have to be around 17mm to bring the outside of
"flange final driven" flush with the outside lip of hub
cheers

CB500/550 / distance collar for 1978 cb 550
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:43:24 AM »
After bying this bike i have done a lot of custom work and been going through and servicing everything on it. i hadnt done the rear wheel and notice that the front and rear sprokets were slightly out of line upon inspection the final driven had been rubbing up against the hub because the distance collar was missing
In the 500/550 wokshop manual on page 73 the pic with exploded view it is number 13 and is called distance collar B and in the parts list manual it is number 14 and is called collar B RR. axle distance
part no, 42625-283-000 so i will have to make one on the lathe and i obviously know the ID for axle and the OD that fits in the flange final driven bearing but i need to know the OD OF THE STEPPED UP FLANGE and HOW LONG THE STEPPED UP FLANGE ON THIS DISTANCE COLLAR IS that spaces between the hub bearing and the bearing in the ,flange final driven, as it is called in parts list so does anyone have one of these floating around that can give me the accurate measurement. would be much appreciated
cheers edd.

CB500/550 / Re: measuring the cubic capacity with head on
« on: June 28, 2009, 04:14:18 PM »
yep mathewmosse
thats what i will be doing soon almost finished all the customising to a criuser major buffing all over been through just about everypart on bike and fixed what had to be fixed
rebuilt forks as it allready had  longer staunchens wich are bushed on bottom milled legs to take what i think were RD 350bushes for top of legs and all back together better than new just example of type of rebiuld  been doing
except for the head valves and bottom end and will soon do that but after all this work need to ride her around for a bit before i go into her internals
i also got given a cb400f that had been laying  in a paddock for some years as  some parts interchangable the 400 had oil cooler on it in good nick as the oil filter housing on 400 and 550 are same part number the adapter plate in between the filter housing and crank case which the oil lines came out of fits straight on the 550 and the sml radiator in good condition too
and the link you posted for ebay i had alook very interesting will have to look into that further for sure

is the difference between oil and fuel related wet black for oil and dry black for fuel as i have rebuilt carbs and thought maybe swapping floats from another carb into no 3 to see if problem went with floats from that carb 3
