CB500/550 / Fuel Petcock Retaining Screw Washers
« on: June 03, 2018, 07:00:23 PM »
Hello,

I’m after a pair of washers that are used within the fuel petcock with the retaining screws.

CMSNL affectionately call them ‘Packing Cock’. Item number 9 on the parts picture.

David Silver are out and I didn’t want to spend that much at CMSNL on just two packing cocks. Anybody know where else I can source these or does anyone have a couple for sale?

Cheers, Alan.

CB500/550 / After Honda CB500/4 fuel tank and side panels
« on: March 19, 2018, 06:29:37 PM »
Hi all,

Doing a small little side project and after a Honda 500/4 fuel tank and Panels for a 1972 K1 (USA model).

Not too worried about paint condition as it’ll be resprayed at some point, but clean and dent free would be great.

Many thanks, Alan

Other Bikes / My Monkey bike won't run properly
« on: September 01, 2017, 01:00:32 PM »
Hi all,

Now I know this normally isn't the type of bike we talk about on here, but I have problems with a Monkey bike that I'm hoping this fantastic place can help me with.

It's a 1978 Z50J bike with a slightly later 1984 4speed manual engine.

The bike ran normally, no problems and good as gold. Started first kick and accelerated nicely up through the gears.

Then suddenly one day the carb started leaking through the over flow. No problem I thought, I'll pull the carb and obviously something stuck in the needle valve. Did that, re assembled the carb and that problem solved.

Since then it struggles to accelerate, bogs down, stumbles, back fire and die. Then it's not as easy to start up again.

The bike idles fine, will be ok if you very, very slowly open the throttle up.

I've re checked the carb, checked the passages and ensured pilot jet is clear. Used wire and lots of carb cleaner. All clear.

I've checked fuel flow to the carb from the tank and all fine. Also opened up the drain screw on the float bowl and fuel pours out.

Checked for a strong blue spark from the plug and that's ok. Sparks nicely against the engine when I turn the kick starter over.

Any suggestions as to what I can look at next, or what I have missed so far?

Many thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Repairing a kick starter shaft
« on: March 28, 2017, 07:26:21 PM »
Hi all,

Has anybody had experience with having to repair a kickstarter shaft that has had the splines chewed off?

It's on a SL100 so electric isn't an option.

Interested if it's possible without having to split the cases and replace the whole component.

Many thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Where did this Sebring Ignition come from?
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:48:37 PM »
Hi all,

I've posted this on the American SOHC, but wondered if anyone here had come across one of these.

My bike died the other weekend whilst out, and once back at the garage it was diagnosed with no spark and traced back to the electronic ignition.

The unit has Sebring written on it, but I cannot find any info about it. Google has failed me!

My question is, does anyone know where it came from (apart from Sebring!) and where can I get some information on it?

The unit has been replaced, but I'd like to solve the mystery. I've attached some pics.

Cheers, Alan

Thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Running rich and would like some advice
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:42:27 PM »
Hi all,

My CB500 K1 is running rich and I need some advice with where I can go next. All four plugs are sooty, all four have the same appearance. The exhausts are sooty at the ends. The bike will start without the need for choke, and although it runs it always sounds and feels lumpy, especially the lower rev range. Fuel consumption has increased. The bike is standard.

This is what I have done so far -

Clear tube test to determine fuel/float levels. They settle ~2mm below the top of the float bowl. Also used a gauge to set the floats 22mm.
The carbs have 40pilots and 100 mains. All clean and in place.
Air mixture screws are 1 +1/8 turned out.
If you apply the choke whilst running it gets worse, and I removed the air filter and it rode marginally better.

What next steps can I take or do to determine why she is running rich?

Thanks, Alan.

Other Bikes / Exhaust Repair
« on: August 03, 2016, 06:44:15 PM »
Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a place that may do exhaust repairs?

My newly acquired CL350 has some holes. It was listed as 'original and solid' condition. They were half right ;-)

CB500/550 / Decreased Fuel Range :-(
« on: July 08, 2016, 08:22:41 AM »
Hi all,

Since fitting my repro HM323 exhausts, the fuel range has decreased. I used to get ~95 miles before switching to reserve and now only get ~75miles.

Any ideas? Alan

CB500/550 / Turning 550 carbs into 500?
« on: June 28, 2016, 07:34:21 PM »
Hi all,

After looking for information on this I just want to clarify - can I turn Keihin carbs 069A (550) into a Keihin carb 627B (500) by just changing the internals? jets, pilots, etc. The bodies, fittings, etc. are the same across the two models?

Thanks, Alan
