CB500/550 / Lost Air Screw Spring...
« on: June 23, 2016, 08:53:11 PM »
Hi all,

Just discovered that carb No.4 on my CB500 is missing the little brass spring for the air mixture screw. What effect, if any, would this have?

Thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Trouble mounting new HM 323 pipes
« on: June 12, 2016, 11:41:45 AM »
Hi all,

I'm having trouble making my new HM 323 pipes fit correctly on the CB500. No matter what I do or fettle with, I cannot get them to line up. The main problem being the bottom silencers are 1/2 inch off line with the balance tubes and I cannot connect them. The top ones look fine

This is what I have done and checked ...

Brackets are fitted the correct way around. New repro brackets from DSS.
Brackets fitted either side of the foot peg/frame.
System fits flush at the engine end.
System is clearing the engine and frame, not getting caught up with anything.

Anyone had any experience fitting the new repro systems and encountered similar problems? Any help greatly appreciated - this has beaten me  :(

CB500/550 / Out of ideas and need help!
« on: May 29, 2016, 05:14:05 PM »
Hi all,

Today I thought I would replace a leaky cylinder head gasket. All going well, stripped down ok (apart from an odd curse word!) and I cleaned up the area and replaced the gasket. Replaced the everything in the reverse order, following the instructions, and when I went to re-adjust the valves the engine wouldn't turn over by the kick starter. Just stopped dead.

I removed the cylinder head cover and everything turns over again. What am I missing? Without the cover turns over, with and it stops dead.

Other Bikes / Anybody know anything about these old CL350's?
« on: May 16, 2016, 06:48:27 PM »
Hi all,

Having caught the old Honda bug with my CB500, I saw this offering from DK -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331855058231?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Anybody know much about them? Good choice, bad choice, somewhere in the middle?!

Many thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Idle Mixture Setting
« on: April 28, 2016, 06:30:40 PM »
Hi all,

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but what is the adjustment setting for a CB500 K1?

I've read two pieces of information -

1. 1 turn + 1/8
2. 1 1/2 to 2 turns.

Anybody found one better than the other?

Thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / X ring chain on a CB500?
« on: March 19, 2016, 06:11:44 PM »
Hi all,

I've read lots of advice on chains, size, pitch, length, etc. but I've just bought a DID chain and sprocket kit from WEMOTO and wondered if anyone has used this particular one.

It's the DID 530 VX X-ring.

I've read about case rubbings and clearance issues. Is this chain a no go or is it OK?

Thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / Miles per tank? CB500 k1
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:39:29 PM »
Hi all,

Now my bike is registered and insured I've started riding it around, but what kind of mileage do you get from a full tank of fuel? And how much mileage can you do before switching over to the reserve?

Misc / Open / Blueyonder Motorcycle Tours - Normandy Tour 2016
« on: February 10, 2016, 07:20:03 PM »
Hi all,

Plugging a friend of mine who does motorcycle tours on the side when not working 9-5 @NHS.

He does a few tours each year, and the next one is going to Normandy May 2016. See details below. Easy going, relaxed, would certainly recommend.

May 26th - 29th.

A brilliant 3 day tour through Normandy taking in the D-Day beaches and some fabulous roads. If you like the idea of a mix of fast sweeping roads, hilly cross country D roads and history, this is the tour for you. Always a favourite tour!

Meet point will be Portsmouth for the Thursday evening night sailing to Le Havre. Those making their own way over to Le Havre will rendezvous with rest of the group either in Le Havre or some other local point as arranged.

Day 1 will see us making our way through Calvados and calling at Vimoutiers, Domfront before riding the Bocages countryside in to Bayeux. The day should be around 200 miles of top class riding on some fabulous roads.

Day 2 is ride along the D-Day Beaches including Pegasus Bridge, Arromanches and Omaha Beach.

Day 3 is probably the riding highlight of the weekend as we ride the Suisse Normande which as the name suggests is Normandy's mini Switzerland. The ferry departs 17.15 local time and we should dock in Portsmouth around 9.45pm

Bayeux is a fantastic base and the restored medieval city has a great choice of restaurants and bars so we can expect a great social side to this tour too

Price £363 Inc ferry, £263 no ferry. 2 nights in Bayeux.

CB500/550 / Gear shaft oil seal leak
« on: February 07, 2016, 09:39:24 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have an oil leak coming from the gear change shaft seal. I read on this site that it can be changed without major work to the engine and done ?in situ, but it didn't explain how.

Has anyone changed these and do they have any tips?

Many thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / CB500 - some parts up for grabs...
« on: January 31, 2016, 05:46:07 PM »
Taken some parts off my bike that I no longer need. Nothing fantastic but one persons rubbish is another persons treasure!

1. Front Brake Master Cylinder. Came with the bike, works but may benefit from some work. Cap is scratched on one side. Funny shaped lever included  ;)

2. Fuel Tank Mole. Complete set. Not mega shinny but still some life to it. The longer straight pieces have some cracks in each piece.

3. Rear suspension. Again, came with the bike. I couldn't tell you if they work as they should because I didn't road test them.

4. Kerker 4into1 Exhaust. This isn't in the best condition, but as i said 'one persons rubbish...'. The down pipes are solid but have surface rust. The end can is slightly dented in places. Small holes in the end plates of the end can. Doesn't sound loud or impressive.

Free to a good home. I'll only ask for postage costs and perhaps a donation to the site.

Feel free to ask questions, or slate the exhaust system  ;), and I'll try to help out.

CB500/550 / L/H Indicator problems
« on: January 27, 2016, 08:36:19 PM »
Hi everyone,

As the title says, I have an indicator problem. Right hand side works beautifully, left hand side only the rear works and even then just stays on - does not flash. I know the bulb is good at the front, could it be relay?

Any help gratefully received.

CB500/550 / Smokey Exhaust CB500
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:09:27 PM »
Hi everyone,

Having sorted out the sticking clutch problem, after a road test I noticed that the Left exhaust is smokier than the right. This has probably been covered before, but does anyone have any suggestions as to why that is? Piston rings or fuel?

Also I noticed that a white vapour/steam is coming from the breather pipe. You can see this on the picture circled in red. I know the pipe shouldn't end there but the PO routed it along the bike to the rear fender. I'll be moving that at some point!

Many thanks, Alan

CB500/550 / CB 500 clutch problems
« on: January 23, 2016, 06:00:25 PM »
Hi all,

I've put my bike back together and I went to road test it today. The bike starts fine and idles OK, but when I pull the clutch lever in and knock it down into first gear the bike stalls - as if the kick stand was down and the engine cuts out. The bike will start up again first time but will die when put into first gear.

I've read elsewhere on this site about clutch plates becoming stuck if not used for a period of time. The bike came from DK and I've no idea how long it may have been off the road.

Is it likely to be a sticking clutch problem? Has anyone any tips on how to deal with this? Any other ideas as to the cause?

Many thanks, Alan
