Hi Seamus.... guess that's a 'Plan B' as I'm happy to spend £3 on the washers if I can get them.

Thanks K2-K6 / OddJob. Will go back & try a 'full 2 turns' on each air screw & note whether a difference is now apparent. (should have thought of that, doh!)

Thanks K2 for the comment re 'silky smooth' unlikely; the dear old girl is 40 yrs after all & should perhaps be allowed a bit of leeway. It was semi-restored prior to me getting it last April (23000 miles on the clock).... but no idea whether the motor's been opened up - although I doubt is as no tell-tale scuff marks, rounded screws, broken fins...anything to suggest. (which pleases me)

OddJob....I've also a 400F whose engine is a little tired at 50Ks, and due nil time (assuming I want to ride it < I croak) will hand it over for professional restoration. On your advice I'll ask that all you mentioned simply gets renewed - thanks.

Cheers gents,
Lobo.

...thanks guys, specifically I'm unsure of which wires are the 'Switch Housing Wires' - horn / coil feeds? As always it seems, no where near my bike & working from memory / pictures,
Cheers.

Fantastic - thanks sweetpeauk.

Have original Honda Dealer 'uncrating / build' instructions for the 400F, detailing to check loom routings, but (B & W) pics all too dark / unhelpful.

Cheers again.

Anyone able to help with my caliper carrier - which now doesnt seem to be K2 spec. i ordered DSS p/n 45115300030 only to find its visually identical (almost) but about 1/2" longer than my carrier, and with the stopper bolt hole further down towards the caliper. It fits the holder, but is unusable due stopper bolt hole position...and length!
So...don't know what my bike has - are the forks non-CB750K2?

Out of interest (to the preceding thread) both carriers (old & incorrect new) have (approx) 0.3mm slide up & down the pin. The pin is new, and both carriers exhibit slight nod at the caliper - no play detected in the bolted holder. I fitted the one and only washer DSS had (0.1mm) - which isn't enough, but did lessen the 'nod'. I am (almost) convinced a little more spacings (as per the Honda bulletin) may solve my problem. ie it may simply be the 'Joint -Caliper holder' (ie bolt on piece) jaws are minimally too far apart?.
So...still looking for a Honda 0.2 mm spacer....

Misc / Open / Engine Professional Restoration / Rebuild

Wanting any feedback - good or bad - on Stotfold Engineers (Biggleswade) who, on paper, look v.good for a strip down, restoring & rebuild of my tired, but running, 50K 400F engine. I don't have the time (sadly), nor tooling for the work, but am looking for a one-stop service to 'zero time' the engine, including media blast & paint of block etc - top quality work only accepted.
Anyone with A1 recomendations pls note my address as Badingstoke area.
Cheers.

Hi all / Tom?
Also rewiring my 400F, which has been 'got at' in the past, evidenced by some very 'non-standard' loom modifications...
Tom, too rude to ask for a couple of photos (L + R) in the coils area; specifically I'm looking for the loom runs up under the tank, ... there's a 90 degree fancy bracket thing, and also a small rubber tie-down. (like the battery hold-down but smaller) - I need to know exactly which wires & routing they're for.

As an aside took off the carbs yesterday....saw the thread on air box / manifold etc removals - how bloody frustrating! Can't wait to put them back. Not.
Happy New year,
Lobo.

Morn OddJob!
Yup, appreciated, but simply carrying out what the Honda maintenance manual says - it does make it all seem black & white.  Moving my air screws +\- 1/4 turn makes no discernible difference to the idle....which is fine, but I would have thought, might be silky smooth, ....instead of 'smooth'.
Quite happy no leaks, clogs, jet issues as the carbs just been very carefully & thoroughly overhauled with new parts throughout. Timing & valves set correctly before this set-up, and the engine at operating temp < set-up.
Will the plug-chop indicate best air-screw position?, I figured this was more about main-jet setting.
Cheers & Happy NY to all,
Lobo

Results are in... and whilst near, not spot-on. This is my first time at carb balancing, and what I did notice is that the comparitive vacuums vary - to a small degree - with throttle setting. The good old Hoover was used at a constant approx 1/3 throttle, whereas the 'engine balancing' was initially done at approx 1000 RPM. I only latterly noticed a slight change in balance with throttle setting, and so then re-balanced to a 'mean' value between 1000 & 3000 rpm. (but honestly, nothing too significant). Comments pls?
Regarding the subsequent mixture screw setting (from the 'factory' 1 turn out) I must have the ears of an imbacile, and could not detect any change in engine note / rom with the recommended +/- 1/4 turn. Comments again? (the carbs just overhauled with brand new DSS aftermarket jets etc.
No road test yet.... raining & bike just too pristine!
Cheers.

Cheers all,
The attached (English & American frames) putting pictures into words. My (American) ignition lock has a protruding pin which locks against the upper headstock flange.
Thanks for the various helps,
Lobo

CB350/400 / Re: Steering Lock Key
« on: December 29, 2012, 05:08:31 AM »
Cheers Bryan - will have a look but unsure of how I'd know without having the 2 frames side-by-side to compare. My parts PDF - kindly supplied by Peter (Kent400) - does not clarify. You gotta ask just why Honda would go to the expense / trouble of 2 different locking systems - I originally figured  some 'elf'n'safety issue - but cars have long had steering locked by the ignition key.
Thanks again.

Tom - sorry to hijack your thread a little...

My 400 is a little 'oddball' in having '77 F2 American frame / engine numbers, which include the swing arm footrests. All the other bits; tank, footpegs, handlebars, lights etc are UK spec. But from this thread I now learn the steering lock may be different - ie mine is operated via the ignition key.
Q. I was considering 'upgrading' my frame to the later UK (E) one with loop pillion footrests - but now ask if in doing so I'll loose the steering head frame configuration and have to revert to a separate lock system? (ie given the choice I'd stick with my ignition operated steering lock, and perhaps save considerable work in the process.)
Cheers & thanks...

Thanks K2-K6,

DSS had 01 OEM Carrier in stock, a couple of pins,  one 0.1mm spacer & nil 0.2mm. I won't be near the bike until NY day, and so simply thought 'sod it' & ordered the last carrier, pin & shim. My problem is I can only get hands-on with the bikes a couple of days PCM, and to order / play with shims, find not cured & thence DSS nil more carriers was too much to bear!

And ta for the heads up on the shank bolts - will take a look.

The issue, I am 99% sure, is the 'nodding' of the caliper - it was getting silly in that to stop the annoying clunk I was involuntarily applying slight front brake over bumps. Furthermore the Honda bulletin descibes a different problem (seemingly) to what I was experiencing - ie clunk with brake.
Again, thanks for your help.
Cheers, Lobo.

Thanks Bryan for taking the trouble.
Not certain (after all) it describes my problem and thinking I'm in for a DSS £100 new carrier.
Ah well, tis Christmas after all....
As a general note to all out there we should perhaps bear this in mind if considering a second hand carrier off ebay!
Cheers,
Lobo.
