Hi K2-K6,

Agreed, and yes, it does move in an arc - suggesting hole wear? I figured if a spacer were slotted in between all mating faces then this would arrest any 'nodding' of the carrier. The fact that Honda show optional washers in the parts diagram, and Bryanj mentions a Bulletin, all attest to the fact that it may be a known problem. Surely Honda wouldn't bother supplying a washer to stop a 0.1mm slide up & down the pin - but I could see it as a preventative measure to minimise exagerated nodding at the caliper.

Have got to add, it is not as alarming as it all sounds... which is why I guess the MOT man wasn't concerned. I've had it all stripped down, there's no obvious wear, or signs of abuse etc. My main gripe is the odd clunk over bumps etc.

The bike was semi-restored when I bought it, and perhaps the carrier had been seized at some point and subsequent corrosion removal has taken material away too. In which case I'm up for a new carrier...
But will try a spacer first...
Cheers, Lobo.

Steff - I think you've just fixed it! Thanks.

Whilst I do indeed have those O rings, there are no 0.1  / 0.2 mm washers. And whilst the slop appears  minimal at the carrier head it is not so at the caliper, ie seems I just now have to find those spacer washers......

Many thanks again,
Lobo

Thanks guys, thanks Bryanj,

Yup, had the thing apart (twice) and have to say, nothing particularly alarming. There is minimal slop in the pin, but, I guess when magnified 6" away at the caliper head it does become quite apparent.
I'm a little 'reluctant' to simply buy a second hand carrier off ebay etc, as in all likelihood I'll simply end up a similarly worn part.  Hence my question on bushings...

Will now wait to see if Bryanj can shed light.... thanks again so far

New back to biking after 30yrs - and can't find any tolerances / specs on this.  Basically my 1971 K2's caliper moves up & down by upto 1/8" due slop in the carrier. This pin (I guess) is OK as a snug fit into the upper / lower caliper holder mounts (& shows no waisting) - so the play is within the holder itself. This translates into a fairly mechanical 'clunk-clunk' noise when transversing bumps etc  at low speed. It, of course, goes away if any drag on the brake.
I pointed this out at the recent MOT - no concerns at all. So, is it normal, and if not any suggestions eg bushings - or am I up for a new holder? I read in the various maintenance manuals about calipers seizing on with lack of use - can't ever imagine mine seizing with this amount of free play!
Cheers.

New Member Introductions / Poor etiquette on my behalf & hi

Sorry folks, in my haste last month to sort problems overlooked the basics.... So, Hi!

Before I start you'll perhaps know I've already been using the 'site, and I've just got to say how blown away I am with everyone's generosity in both time & imparting knowledge - a belated thanks.

So, back into bikes after a 30 year abstinence, and last April bought a semi-restored 1971 '750K2 - which is a work in progress, but coming along nicely. The frame, engine & tank were all professionally restored, the rest... hmm; it was though the owner either run out of taste, cash, or both. Anyways, on track to be a very nice Candy Ruby / original looking example.

Then in Nov I bought a 77 '400F; this one in less good condition & needing more attention. Potentially a little beauty, and will again, try to bring her up to, as near as damn it, factory fresh.

Nice to meet you all,
Lobo.

CB750 / Re: Carb Balancing - on the bench?
« on: December 17, 2012, 01:45:58 AM »
Steff - I might be stuffed!
I have stripped the carbs (inc plate set for re-chroming) all to component parts, and renewed all jets etc. So this set-up is from scratch, and my biggest worry right now is (lately) reading the DSS aftermarket carb kits are 'iffy'. Will be v.upset if so, as there is absolutely NO point is selling 'em if they aren't up to the job. Comments on what to expect welcome as not able to reinstall carbs on bike till late Dec.

We'll see,...will report back on actual bench set-up versus engine set-up, tho' likely after xmas. Funny old thing K2-K6, I DID set them up at 1/3 throttle - only because the bloody Hoover kept cutting out! (overheat!)
By hoover (!), by eye, they are perfect,  fingers crossed...

Green 1. Incredibly disappointing news of DSS, I used them a lot this summer (small parts) and have not been disappointed. You must be well pi**ed off.
From my point of view a BIG thanks for taking the time to look at the -400 tank - you have saved me an awful lot of heartache as I was seriously considering the DSS route which would have given me a spare tank set for the cost of a re-spray. Phew, and owe you a beer or two...
Am also now concerned as just rebuilt (last night) a bank of carbs for my latest weakness ('72 CB750) using his pattern jets... and now read (on other forums these give trouble). Bloody hell...
Planning the same task on my 400F soon, anyone here able to comment on the reasonably priced pattern carb kits - or stay away & dig deep for OEM carb parts?
Cheers, Lobo.

CB750 / Carb Balancing - on the bench?
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:28:39 AM »
Hi all,
Lateral thinking or won't work?  Have just torn down / rebuilt the carbs of my K2. Last night had a brainwave (??!) and balanced them on the bench via the Hoover (don't tell the missus). With a steady vacuum got nice / repeatable stable readings across the bank, though of course not in the 16-24 cm Hg range (which I guess is simply that around 900rpm idle). Point is, the carbs are 'balanced' spot on.
Or are they?  In this exercise are you (a) trying to match the throttle openings precisely (which I have) or..(b) are you trying to match the vacuums taking into account each cylinder performance. eg - one worn cylinder would throw its carb slide out of matched position when balancing the vacuum.
Cheers, Lobo.

Thanks all, plenty to go at!  in the Hampshire area by the way...

Green 1, would be interested to know why DSS doesn't go the whole hog & apply all decals to their painted tanks. And David's thoughts on application of Honda / SuperSport decals on top of the lacquer coat? - a good thing?

Think it stiil around according to DVLA. I bought it April '78, and (stupidly) sold it 2yrs later to fund... crap.
Someone out there taking good care of her? I hope so. PM me pls, no specifics necessary in case I come 'round & 'repatriate' her to the rightful owner!....
Cheers, Lobo.

..you have a good point there Bryanj. A big concern though is the lack of the 'Honda' decal on the tank - ie you presumably apply it over the lacquer (?) finish.  May look a bit naff / suffer fuel spills or simply lift at the edges?
