Title: Why is this so expensive?
Post by: florence on June 24, 2020, 09:53:47 PM
I'm not criticising this bike, just hoping someone who knows more than me about cafe racers can educate me and tell me why things like this attract such high prices?  It makes me tempted to convert my bike.  Perhaps there is something I'm missing?

That's very similar to my 550/4 Mongrel Florence.
And to be honest, mine cost about £3500 to build from scratch, including full engine rebuild, and that's with Trig doing all the work which cost me nothing. I would probably want the same or similar price as the one advertised if I were to sell mine, its not actually worth that of course being a one off but Mongrels / cafès/ brats/ bobber etc never are but if done correctly they can make good money. Mine is 100% better than the one for sale, that's for sure. Not everyone can build a bike so for those that want something different, it's the only way to own one.

Yours is built from scratch with nothing left needing work, like a new bike. I have a feeling this one is a lash up from a crusty old barn find, look at the rusty throttle cable, frame/yokes and wheels powder coated in one piece. No engine build. Says new carbs so the photos must be before fitting them. As said, buying the latest trend.

well, I'm always a fan of one-offs.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it overpriced, although good point about how much it costs to build them.  Mine was pretty expensive by the time I had rebuilt the engine.

Having seen your bike in the flesh Julie I can say that if the other eBay bike is worth 5.5k yours is worth 10k. Except for Triggers dodgy engine paint (that I happen to like) of course. ;D
