CB350/400 / Alternator loom clip
« on: March 08, 2024, 10:19:47 AM »
Does anyone have a decent pic of a 400F with the alternator loom clip fitted please. A photo of that oil pump area with the cover off (obviously) would be great.  Revisiting my 1986 resto of my '75 400F and correcting things that I didn't fuss too much about when I was a younger man ! Where riding was more important than restoring.

Misc / Open / Brituro silencers
« on: March 04, 2024, 04:37:23 PM »
I got this back from Brituro as I needed a pair of RS250RSA downpipes. ( so I panic bought a set via eBay from  one of their  distributors).

Hi Ash,
Brituro silencers ltd has closed, we are temporarily operating under a company called GH Manufacturing

Unfortunately we aren’t making downpipes at the moment.

Kind regards

Joe

« on: February 27, 2024, 11:19:34 PM »
Does anyone know the CB400F Throttle cable A & B lengths please?

Have some similar cables mixed up (eg CB250/360G5) and I need to identify which are indeed for the 400F

Anorak's Corner / CB400F airbox rubber sealant
« on: February 09, 2024, 09:30:21 AM »
Any tips on the type of sealer/mastic to use between the the 400F plastic airbox and the rubber inlets/large oval rubber seal.

In the past I suspect I used this black coloured AS1701 silicone sealant. .. however the tube I have is very old and  has gone solid and it's now £50 a tube.

I found I do have some of this black polyurethane 2-part sealant (out of date but still usable) and I will use this unless anyone can suggest something more suitable.

Member 4 Sales / CB500 627B Carbs ***** SOLD******
« on: January 20, 2024, 02:20:00 PM »
I am breaking up these 627B carbs next week to sell the parts on eBay /F.B.  but if someone wants to take them for £45 plus post I will sell on here complete.

The main jet pick-up tube castings are a bit fluffy at the bottom but I reckon could be made to seal OK. However, that's the reason I am breaking for parts and up to you if you want to use them.

Slides move freely, lovely clean float bowls and lifter chromed bar. All float pins free, original Keihin brass-ware and generally pretty unmolested. One spring clip pinged onto the freezing cold garage floor but I will recover so everything complete.

Misc / Open / Honda Owners Club Discounts
« on: January 17, 2024, 09:33:50 AM »
I joined HOC last year to get a dating certificate on my C110 and you occasionally get a magazine but not a patch on the Tansha magazine  but VJMC is a lot more expensive on dating  and they are real sticklers on issuing a dating cert. particularly when it comes to the clarity of VIN frame stampings.

Anyway, the magazine came yesterday and has a list of 2024 member discounts. Interesting that RS BikePaints give 10% discount to members ... didn't know that. M&P and Central Wheels give 5%

The rear outer cover has a full page ad for David Silver Spares ..... but guess who is not in the discount list. :(

Anorak's Corner / Tyre Changing Jigs
« on: January 12, 2024, 08:07:01 AM »
Anyone used one of the cheapo sub £100 tyre changers/bead breakers that are around now. or recommend anything sub £200?

I have loads of tyres to fit plus I need to remove the new tyres from my CB250 RS wheels (alloy rims) , re-plate the spokes and then refit the tyres which will cost me at least £50 at the very limited number of bike shops in this area that are capable of fitting motorbike tyres.

Anorak's Corner / Frame Alignment Checking
« on: January 08, 2024, 11:28:34 AM »
Anyone reading my CB250RSA project resto will see that the bike has one fork stanchion quite badly distorted. I need to quiz the PO in the pub I go to to ask about the history but whatever, I need to check the frame alignment. MCID on here had put me onto an old school bike shop that does realignment but I would like to do some initial checks myself. I was thinking of clamping the frame to a solid bed with a long precision bar mounted through the swinging arm mount tube ( or a bar with cones on it) and adjust the frame position until it is clamped with the bar dead horizontal. (I have a digital inclinometer with dual lasers & accurate to 0.1 degree to set this up). Then mount another bar  with suitable adapters in the headstock tube and check that the bar is at 90 degrees to the horizontal bar in the swinging arm tube. If this measurement is out then worth the 200 mile trip to get it checked out/ realigned. Also been offered another frame with V5 but who is to know if it too is bent? Anyone on here done any DIY frame alignment measurements or can offer any further advice?
The PO (owned from new) did have a donor bike so there is a chance he swapped the stanchions from the donor. I think I will assume that the bottom yoke/ head bearings may be suspect, so I will replace.

Misc / Open / Locked threads
« on: December 18, 2023, 07:13:10 AM »
Working with stainless steel at my current job I  have had lots of locked threads  ;D .. Ha ha the gall of it Ashimoto ;D ;D

However, a question for SteveD ... how many threads have you had to 'Lock' during your tenure of this forum? Seen a couple this year but don't remember many in previous years?

A lot of it goes over my head anyway . It's all Double-Dutch to me  :D :D :D :D

A lot of the fasteners on my 1980 CB250RSA have olive drab green passivated zinc plating.

I found it hard to find any of the passivate solution at a reasonable price on-line.
I phoned Gateros Electroplating and the owner Tony told me that they no longer supply olive drab passivate as it can't be sold for DIY use anymore. So he doesn't stock it now. However, he found some old stock, enough to make me 2 litres of the dip but I had send him a letter on my VAT registered business notepaper stating that it won't be re-sold and that I will use it in an industrial environment with the necessary safety PPE. So it should be winging it's way to me shortly.

Just wondering if anyone else on here has done any olive drab green passivated zinc parts. I know that is was used on many Yamaha models. I have also seen it on CB400F chain guide rings and the metal parts of Honda  front disc brake 'spats'. I did once get some parts finished  in zinc  olive drab by Allenchrome in Pocklington but they no longer do bike related stuff.

Misc / Open / What price loyalty CB750 Faces
« on: December 08, 2023, 09:12:35 AM »
Went on Marcels site a few weeks ago to buy a single CB750K0 gauge cover and lens, which was listed as being available as a single item but told out of stock for two weeks. Stock became available recently but now won't sell me a single cover ..only available in pairs. I have supported this company from the off making many recommendations on forums etc. So a bit miffed really that I am going to have to shell out for a cover I dont need. What price loyalty eh ?

UPDATE: Found I can get a single one cheaper from Yamiya ... anyone know if this is the same part? My Man-in-Japan will get me one and bring over with my other parts.

I am also getting an MPH face set from Yamiya for a K1 but I don't need the tacho face ...so if anyone wants one you can have it for what I pay for it (not sold singly)

SOHC Singles & Twins / 1980 CB250RS Project.
« on: November 26, 2023, 09:20:36 PM »
Picked up a 1980 CB250RS Single this week. Always fancied one since I saw the restored one in Classic Mechanics a few years back. Been off the road since 1991 and spent the last few months under a tarp outside. Taken off the road  because it had burned out a valve and done 50k miles. A bit of a change for me as my latest year model bike is a '75 CB400F .. But I had to save it!  ::)

Like most of my bikes I got the silencers before getting the bike and had these made directly by Brituro, rather than from David Silvers.  We literally chucked the bike in the back of my mates van on Thursday and I won't have chance to fully asses it until I go to my mates warehouse (where I do my painting) on Wednesday. Even though the bike comes with a spare head, in unknown condition, I bit the bullet and bought a NOS head with valves inlet rubber etc, plus a NOS cover with the rockers etc. fitted and NOS cylinder barrel. This should hopefully save me a load of grief. I picked up these bits today near Easingwold York and the seller included a surprise freebie pair of wheels and a spare seat. The bike comes with a spare set of wheels (and CDi) but I suspect that these freebie wheels are in better nick and the spokes with replate fine at home. I bought a lovely crank and gearbox/selector parts from DK but the b*ggers have lost one parcel with the gearbox bits in it >:( It is shown as being in transit via DHL but oddly no tracking given. They refuse to discuss this over the phone and will only communicate via eBay messaging. I wanted them to ship everything together but they refused, saying one part may possibly damage the other in transit.

The great thing about this model is that there is hardly any chrome on it and I now feel confident enough to paint it myself in pearl blue original colour. Piki on here is kindly supplying the decals although I am going to paint the stripes myself.

Laverda Dave has been a  fantastic source of help to me on this model and has some spares to trade. Thanks Dave !  If anyone else has decent parts then I will pay a decent price.

I bought a late version of the parts book for £20 in fantastic condition and I hope to scan it sometime and share with others in my Dropbox links. It  covers the early and later e-start models.

Feast yer eyes on these NOS top end parts ... they don't come along every day of the week ! Cost ££££ but it's only money. Pics of the bike to follow but be warned it's not at all pretty  :-[
