Just out of curiosity Nigel, what’s the largest tyre you’d tackle given you make it sound so easy? I seem to remember (just) managing my 400F, but would baulk at the rear wheel of a ‘750.

Maybe the fault was my penchant for Johnson’s Baby Talc versus silicon grease…?

Intriguing Ash, will be interested to know your findings; wondering what Hondas jig tolerances would have been back in the early 80s?

Your post does not mention verifying the castor angle in spec; nor checking any lateral offset of the headstock tube - both possibly affected by a front end collision?

Edit - I’ve now seen your post elsewhere wrt this checking, and suspect you’re well ahead of my observations! Forgive me.

…bind the head of the loom with PTFE plumbing tape - far easier to deal with than electrical insulation tape. Pull string of your choice.

Thanks James. Tbh I’m not having problems with the spigot screws as using a very nice long Allen wrench which fits in between the clamping crown fins.

I’ll play with your suggestion, but basically feel those spigots are engineered to clamp down squarely (against the crimp rings) in order to guarantee a seal. We’ll see… otherwise it’ll be something a bit more significant 😱.

Still struggling as to ‘what’s changed’.

Thanks James - yep, I have removed it; the crush washer is crushed evenly. Are you saying that if I set the silencer as wanted, and only then tighten down the spigot (sympathetically) it’ll work out? (have a set of new crush washers at the ready - not keen to use ‘em until I’m certain of a positive result!)

If I understand this correctly, the #2 exhaust muffler connector will subsequently loose vertical alignment with #1 - ie presumably I’ll have to refit / realign #1 exhaust spigot?

(Accepting it’s a different exhaust part #; I looked under my Sandcast and note the pipes well clear of all frame paraphernalia - which only added to the confusion)

Anyways - appreciate this new info and will try again later in the week.

Ran out of time 1/2 through today, but got #2 pipe off and am struggling to see how to  get the clearance I want - and figure I’m going to have to SLIGHTLY grind it’s ‘hanger hole’ so it butts to the frame off-square…. and ‘tilts’ the exhaust inwards a few degrees.
What’s really confusing me is that I’ve owned / been intimate with this bike and its HM341 pipes 10yrs now, and never been aware of this issue. I stripped it completely down last year, there was no rub / witness markings evident in either the frame nor exhaust - so what gives??? The only 2 things that changed in the rebuild are the newly powder coated frame, and my ‘plastic sleeving’ the footrest bolts as they had excessive vertical slop.

Thanks gents - my lazy error Dave, indeed all is original / NOS. I reckon it’ll be Ken’s suggestion… it was my next avenue but always hopeful of something easier! Whilst I’m here, given engine movement, what kind of ultimate gap am I looking for… 5mm?

CB750 / #2 Exhaust fouling frame

Having an issue with #2 exhaust butting up against the frame in the side-stand area on the ‘750 K2. Everything OEM; and despite loosening all fasteners, and thence retightening with the pipe held clear… it simply resumed its ‘comfort zone’. Which is not mine!

Comments / tips please?

As an aside, not sure why you should be ‘stricken with fear’ wrt disassembling the carbs - your basic abilities seem sound!
Certainly understand the comfort zone stuff, but there are 2 questions you need to ask yourself before tacking… (1) will the world stop turning, and (2) will I die? 😂. If no, have a go… just be slow, methodical, use 4 tubs (ie one for each carb), do it by the book, and use this forum. Best of all, no special tools are needed - not even vacuum gauges or a carb tune - assuming you keep them stock and bench set them.
These carbs are not especially high tech, you’ll come away enlightened and somewhat more confident.

Totally accepted Gareth, condensation in fuel is a concern, and apparently occurs at abouts 1ppm per degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature. At 30ppm upwards it begins to be a problem - enough condensation can lead to a hazardous volume of water in the fuel over time.
Regular fuel drains / topping the tanks of course keep this in check, minimising this as a direct cause of engine failure.

… where it quotes:
“An analysis of defect reports and accident investigations shows that there are five main causes of loss of power and engine failure due to water in the fuel; water entering the fuel tank via faulty fuel cap sealing; water contaminated fuel being pumped into the aircraft fuel tank during re-fuelling, and poorly executed post-refuelling / pre-flight water checks, compounded by unintended water retaining ridges in the bottom of fuel tanks, and flawed water drain location”

Certainly I agree dissolve water becoming free water within fuel (ie with change of temp) is an issue; tho’ hopefully kept at bay with protocols. In the context of engine failure however (this thread), and light aviation, it could be argued that other system failures are generally more to blame?

To be fair here, the issue here is more related to faulty fuel cap seals with the aircraft standing out in rain, washing etc. Light a/c will typically have vertically mounted filler caps, and often recessed - which only exacerbates this. Bad fuel can too be an issue. I’ll stop washing the bike!

I’d argue though that 2 weeks is insufficient to pool any substantial amount of water, but more pertinent is the fact that on Normal (vs Reserve) you’re taking (good) fuel from a couple of inches up.

If a fortnight was enough to cause grief suppliers would have done something about it surely?

Appreciate the thought though.

Thanks Skoti - appreciated. Tbh though, I’m in the habit of selecting the fuel OFF a mile out from home, and running the ‘bowls dry < putting the K2 to bed. This, I guess, would negate water in the carbs? (also stay away from Ethanol additive fuel)

Martin - apologies, didn’t reply. The bike has all new loom, as new electrical components, clean connectors / earthings etc, and a new LiFe battery - whose characteristics include minimal voltage drop over time (a year at least). And given the very energetic cranking witnessed, I’m confident the battery voltage is just fine.

A suggestion has been made to open the ‘plug gaps up slightly (have electronic ignition) in an effort to provide a ‘better’ spark which might hopefully offset the rich start mixture / cold engine otherwise extinguishing it. Makes sense, and certainly worth a shot; it’ll take a few weeks to verify and I’ll obviously report back.

Would this make it run rich what do you set them at

The position you have effectively raises the needle, thereby allowing more fuel in the mix, and as you surmise, richer.
