CB500/550 / Re: Chainguard Repair

I tried the JB weld version first but it would not set - managed a refund via ebay I suspect it was out of date so used UniBond version that is for harder materials.

Quite a few U tube videos of melting black cable ties as a repair - I do not have a suitable heat gun.

CB500/550 / Chainguard Repair

Not sure if it will work long term but used some Epoxy Resin repair solution to fix a broken section.  I added some micronised graphite to make it black.
I have some proper paint for flexible plastics that I will paint it with eventually.
Cleaned/roughed up the broken area & drilled it for a couple of strengthening pegs plus some saw cuts to help the bonding.

Nice bike Ash, at the Station  where I worked a young PW used to commute on her learner motor cycle.
She turned up after passing her test on this single cylinder Honda it was a 250 RS aside from splashing out on a new bike she would wax lyrical about how nippy & economical it was compared to my 750GS. It had a good turn of speed in traffic iirc methinks it had a disc brake being a strangely skinny bike for a 250 - multi valve possibly as well - it was a long time ago!

Just looked at your photo 4 valves in one cylinder. Have you taken a before photo or was it in too many parts?

I have found the longer the extension bar the better my cordless impact driver seems to work - I call it the torque stick effect!

This might be irrelevant but.....

At the start of your thread you mention a blue light for left & green light for right in your photo it looks like a green wire going to the left side sensor or am I colour blind?

Thanks for the tip, it’s got good reviews online but there seem to be restrictions on its sale. Will try my luck next week

If you live near a vehicle trade paint supplier might be worth a visit wearing your dirtiest overalls - it is nasty stuff as you might be aware so ensure you wear the right safety gear.

I used Paramose Industrial bought it on e-bay last year - I just made a sort of declaration about H & S. Seller no longer on e bay as per my previous purchase they seem to move around.

Yes I noticed that. I think it's just a different decision on how to best fit everything. Sensor position doesn't matter as long as the rotor is keyed correctly to accommodate that position. My biggest problem was getting both cylinders timed, as you can see the sensors at actually touching and there was no movement left. I had to half the difference and his left it very slightly out but it still runs well.

Oddly enough it took me ages to get the timing marks correctly aligned for 1/4 and 2/3 on my 400 - it was fitted with the Dyna system.
Even though the individual sensors are slotted for adjustment getting it right between the baseplate & the individual sensors took me ages.
It was easy to get 1/4 right but 3/4 would run out of adjustment so then had to move the baseplate a bit, re adjust 1/4 then check 2/3 and repeat as nipping down the baseplate would change the settings slightly.
Definitely worth my effort as the engine sounded quiter & smoother when I finally got it right.
It actually took me attempts spanning several days as I would leave it saying thats close enough only to go back to make minor changes.

I know nothing about black bombers but my casual observation is that in the first photo the two ignition sensors are in the lower quadrant, in Roys photo the sensors are in the upper quadrant - just looks so different even if neither is at TDC?

Could be different design of rotors - how do they compare to the original points base plate locations?

I think Ken did not approve but I used a blob of Hondabond on top of the grub screw with a small stainless washer as a cap.

Yes one of my bearings was similarly damaged, when I drilled out the small pin I found the inner right half of the bearing was missing. I suspect it had been broken for some time looking at the crud that was there.
Surprisingly the shaft seemed pretty well supported with one and a half bearings. Sourced a good one from Ken, as a one off repair it would have been too expensive to have a new part specially made.

I think Florence might still have a spare worth a PM.

Quite a few poor review out there for those Ted.

Wrong alignment of lugs, bulb location etc. Plus soft resolution of flutes in glass pressing that appear to give generally mushy beam pattern and light control.

Hardly surprising for a lamp that was made by Lucas and fitted to TR's in 1956!
I doubt an out of patent copy version will be up to modern standards.
Iirc the originals had the tripod from the center recessed on the outside if the glass lens.

I'll stick with my fully LED unit for now - truth  is like riding in the rain that is mostly avoidable , riding in the dark is no fun as I get older.

That internal Tripod and centre button is what appeals to me as retro.
If they were still made today  I would fit a Carello Pajod parabolic reflector units - far better than the Cibie  version back in the day imho. They were fitted in E-types back in the late 1960s as an upgrade
At that time Cibie headlamp lens was concave  whereas the Carell was a bug eyed version with a deep parabolic shaped reflector.
