Misc / Open / What would have happened?

I must have had a senior moment when I was reassembling my carbs recently, I had forgotten to replace the tube part of a needle jet on the most left hand carb, unless it really was the garage it had been to recently(?) 
I ended up breaking down with fuel starvation miles from home and had to be rescued. Now I've replaced the part with a bit of help from Steve at 400bits because they item seldom features in carb repair kits or on it's own. (see image)
I wonder if one of the great experts on here can tell me what would have been happening in the run up to conking out and not starting again?
