Im fitting a switch like this, only its an old genuine Honda one. Where does it get the earth from for the starter ?
There is a blob of solder on top of the switch inside which activates the solenoid when earthed but it doesn't touch the handlebars, should it or am I on the wrong track altogether?[attachimg=1]

All the switch does is operate the solenoid/relay
The heavy current is carried by power lead to the relay, and then the starter.

Yes I understand that, my issue is the circuit diagram shows the switch creates a circuit by connecting the yellow/red wire to earth, but I dont have an earth conection.
-
The starter button simply connects the yellow/red wire to the switch cluster body. Therefore making earthing it to the handlebars.
-
So it earths through the body of the switch. Mine doesn't so Im thinking something is missing from the inside.
Does anyone know what contacts the neg side of the push button to the body or the handlebars. If I use a wire to make the jump it all works ok.

If I'm thinking correctly, I think there should be a pin/dowel in the bottom half of the switch case that fits in a hole in the handlebar. It depends which type of switch gear you have though.

OK, Thanks Ill check that out in the morning.

Look inside the switch and tell me how many wires go to the starter button, there are two type of switch which work differently
-
Two wires, black and red/yellow.
All the wiring diagrams show an earth which is what I confused by.

Good call Bryan. If you have two wires they should be a black live feed and a yellow / red out. The Black live feed may also come from a connection from the left switch ;)

Earth is for the earlier switch which is your handle bars ;)

Your switch maybe for a 550 if it has two wires to the start button >>> http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb550/technical_reference/WD550C.jpg
You can see the differences here >>> http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb500/service_manual/HSM500550_11.pdf

I think your right, Ill see if I can find another switch. Got a few in the junk pile
If not Ill improvise.

You can Improvise, it is just a bit of sodding about with the wiring ;)

Look in your stash for one that has the kill switch like this >>> https://www.cb-four.com/cgi-bin/shop/__Switch-Starter-right-Honda-CB750K1-K2-new__18-465-17_07.05.html

will do.

You know were i am if you need me mate.
If it was not pissing it down all the time, i would take a ride over and see what stage you are at ;)
-
Thanks Graham. Yes, stop by anytime, be nice to see you both.

You can use the swich you have if you go to the solenoid 2 small wires and leave the yellow/red where it is but change the other small solenoid wire to an earth and not a power, also make sure all the blacks from the rh switch are connected to black in the headlamp.
All you are doing is powering the solenoid instead or grounding it
-
Cheers Oddjob, Im going to see what else Ive got.
The thing that threw me was the thing works when grounded .
It looks to my non electrically trained mind that the solenoid gets power from the small black wire and the yellow/red is earthed when the switch is pushed, thereby creating a circuit.
My switch (550} has an extra wire from clutch lever switch (to stop in gear starting without clutch, I think) I reckon I could use this switch by making it earth and doing away with the black "safety" wire. Anyway what could possibly go wrong. :-\
