Title: Manifold bands
Post by: Nurse Julie on February 17, 2015, 09:45:03 PM
Hi Chaps
I'm trying to find some of the metal bands that attach the carbs to the manifold at the front and the air box at the back on my 400/4. At present there are just ordinary stainless jubilee clips there but although they do a perfectly reasonable job, I don't like them and they have got to go. What I understand is that originally they were black with a screw through to tighten them. DSS do a substitute but they are approx £5 each and I would need 4 of 1 part number and 4 of another, therefore about £40 in all. Does anyone know of a similar band that is available at a lower price ?.
Ta in advance
Julie :-* :-*

Don't have an answer to your question... just to say mine are silver, not black. Don't know of there were variants. Hope someone had an answer

Im sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong Tom  ::) ::). Maybe I'm thinking that if the DSS ones are black then the original were black also. Believe it or not but I have found some in shocking pink, jade green, sunrise yellow and purple but no black, how weird is that  ;D ;D

Go for shocking pink Julie, nobody would want to nick it, plus it would make a girly owner statement! :))

That's what I understand as well John but I'm told the 550/550 ones are too big for the 400 which is a shame. How was the Gammon Shank ?

Oh yes, thay are stainless steel, well I never. But they are not the horrible jubilee clips I have, maybe I just need the stainless clamps with the screw through the bottom, I think they may be called 'T, bolt clips or something like that. I will look again.

Why not spray the clips black for now until you find something more suitable

Hi Julie,

Mine are a held on by stainless(?) clamps something like the style shown here: http://www.clampmanufacturers.net/nut-bolt-clips.html#hose-clips.

I doubt very much they're orginal, but from my recollections of the 1970's they look like the type of thing we used back then, rather than bog standard jubilees, as you rightly dislike in this context.

Not at home but could photo for you later if that would be of any help.

Cheers,

D.

Hi Drew.
Yes, your link does show the one's I'm looking for. I think I have come to the wrong conclusion that the originalls were black. I got that impression because the ones that DSS sell are black but they are obviously not original. I will have a measure up and order some forthwith, after I have done the housework that is.......boring  ::) ::) ::) after which I can play with the bike for a couple of hours
Thanks Drew

Now GET BACK TO WORK  ;D ;D ;D

Thought they were black originally on the 400/4?
Is there a UK agent for Cruzinimage to avoid the dreaded import duty etc etc. ?  Saisei?

The consensus is Ash that the 500 and 550's were black and the 400's were stainless. I have been looking at pic's of original 400's and they do indeed seem to be stainless. Im getting to the stage wher I really don't mind either, I just can't stand those bloody jubilee clips.

Yea Jubilee clips are bad news. The Honda ones I ordered in 1986 were black but can't remember what originals were.

Those on my 9000 mile 400 F2 are silver / stainless and I believe they are the originals.

The clips Drew suggests look the business - closer to the original type and much better than jubilee clips.
If / when you order can you post price details here please Julie. It would be interesting to see how they
compare in that respect to the DSS items or jubilees.

HA Ha great to have you back Graham.

Well checked my '75 and it's got BZP clamps, as has this low miler that  DSS sold  at MECUM Las Vegas in January this year  4k  miles F2 ( ...NOTE THE BLUED PIPES, NEVER SEEN THAT ON A 400/4) So I was wrong but there again it's 29 years since I fitted them !

I have two of the black ones and two of the BZP ones going spare Julie ... yours if you want 'em. they are not NOS though but could be made tidy. didn't even know I had them.

BTW the metal brake line was BZP but superseded to that black finish. I can easily replate 'em BZP though.

That was the word i was looking for Ash "BZP". The originals were in fact BZP but, Honda superseded the part to a black painted one that DSS list as genuine (off another Honda) This is a problem because a lot of people think if a part is listed genuine than it must be original. Two totally different words that confuses a lot of people.

Well I found Julie 4 clips 2 black (NOS but 'shelf wear' ) and two heavily tarnished silver BZP ones. Killing two birds with one stone (sorry Julie and Graham). I am going to try the BZP plating contraption I am doing for Graham (99p challenge) on Julie's bands. I bunged them in oxalic acid last night before I retired down the pub and the black ones instantly lost the black coating so it's definitely not paint on that type, some form of plating or surface coating. The black style also have 'folded over edges'. I will post a few pics of the plating in action so you can all take the pi*s. Probably tomorrow night.

Ash

I will watch out for the pic's Ash. It will be interesting to see what happens. If it works does that mean I owe Graham 99p for the first ever use of his plating contraption?  ;D ;D ;D
