Title: Master Cylinder Rebuild
Post by: andut on December 21, 2015, 08:28:19 AM
Could do with some help / wisdom again please !

I have noticed a small brake fluid leak from around the brake lever recently, so I ordered a m/c repair kit and set about dismantling it over the weekend.  Didn't get to far before running into trouble !  The rubber boot has perished and I had to dig out the remains of it, but I'm struggling to get the wire retainer out even before tackling the circlip that I was expecting to be the real fun !   Any tips or tricks welcomed !!

Andy

Pretty sure I used a narrow thin-bladed screwdriver to prise out the clip, then could get circlip pliers in.

A cautionary tale - I bought a rebuild kit from eBay. No reason why it shouldn't have been fine for the job, good seller
feedback etc., only when I came to fit it I found the Check Valve was larger across the corners than the bore diameter.
Seller claimed his kits were all the same and nobody had ever reported a problem before, but back it went as it was no use.
Ended up using one of the aftermarket kits from DS which worked a treat.

+1 for Picks. a  set of picks are super useful for the toolbox, straight, 90deg, hooked etc.

I had to buy proper 90deg circlip pliers for the circlip as well, all moy normal ones just wouldn't reach the spot.

+1 on pressing the plunger in first.  Use WD40 as well.  Getting the circlip out is a fun job too.

I did dig the boot retaining clip out with a pick, and then had to buy the long nosed circlip pliers that many others mention which made it a much more simple task. All good now, just need the rain to stop for a road test !

I bought a pair of these circlip pliers. Didn't break the bank and did the job for me.

I went for the 90° version (pretty similar to the OEM Honda tool):

And already used it for disassembling an MC, worked flawless.
