£600 for a pair of 550 wheels? Ebay item number 251574308695.

Maybe if there was 300 quid stuffed inside of the tyres? :-)

Cheers Dan - I've an 88 CBR600 that'll probably be roadworthy before the older girls will (sacrilege, I know!) and it'll be finished in its original pearl white with fighting red trimlines. Milano looks close enough for a chucklehead who like the idea of his bikes having 'matching' colour schemes. :-)

Surface appearance is probably a good guesstimate guide, but if it was mine I'd be reaching for the Plastigauge to help with the decision.
Let us know how you go? :-)

"A "modern equivelent" is Honda Milano Red (from 400 restoration website)"

Good to know - cheers Dan! Do you have a link to the site?

Details aside, it is a beautiful looking machine. Possibly a bit too beautiful. I wouldn't dare take it out - I'd have to shift the furniture around, install it in the lounge and polish it with the finest silks: CB Sculpture! ;-)

Just a quick question Ewan.
Early in the thread you mentioned Morris Minor hubs? Are there Minor bits that go onto a 550?
Cheers,

CB350/400 / DSS Studs
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:36:09 PM »
Hi all

I recall reading somewhere that the F2 400 motor had longer cylinder studs than preceding incarnations to permit higher torque settings for a leak-free rebuild.  There are probably other changes between the 400 year models, but I'm jiggered if I know what they are...

Anyway, the question - does anyone know if the heavy duty studs from DSS (http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400F-SUPER-SPORT-FOUR/part_196822/) will also allow the higher torque settings?

Cheers folks.

Tricks & Tips / Rubber rejuvination.
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:17:45 PM »
Don't worry, it's nothing to do with geriatric fetishists on viagra - I've just had a try of the How To Refurb Rubber thing from this month's Practical Sportsbike and it's worked!

For anyone who's read the article and thought "Hmm..." I'd say give it a go. Two CB550 carb-to-manifold rubbers are now eminently flexible enough to use again - and they were stiffer than the aforementioned geriatrics before receiving the treatment.

The only thing I did differently to the article was to pop the rubbers in a container inside the pan of water - a double boiler affair - and cover 'em with the 50:1 solution recommended in the article. This has two benefits over a plain pan - firstly, you use less of the water / Wintergreen mixture and secondly it helps control the temperature better.

Popped them in and left to cook away for 90 mins with an occasional jiggle to keep things nice and even, I've just fished 'em out and given a good wash in cold water and Bob's my Uncle!

Okay, so at a tenner for the Wintergreen oil it's not that much cheaper than new bits from DSS, but it's handy to know it'll work for the more expensive or hard-to-come-by rubbery bits. ;D

CB400n forks are 33mm diameter - they should slide straight into the original triples.

http://scandalon.com/2009/06/motorcycle-fork-diameter-chart/

500 or 550 hub, laced into an 18", 40-hole rim keeps the speedo setting nice and can take two discs up front.

You could have a look at some of the sculpted rear lights off Peugeot scooters and the likes? Some of them might follow the contour of your seat hump - might need to flip upside-down though? Possibly a CBR600 light from a 90's bike??

I've not seen this month's issue in the usual places - the mag hasn't gone belly-up, has it?

CB350/400 / Anyone recognise this fairing?
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:08:43 PM »
Evening all!

Well, I'm still accumulating parts left right and centre, the plan being to put at least one 400 back on the Queen's highway and I happened across this - http://is02.thegumtree.com/image/big/133128418.jpg

Not exactly a K4 or RC rep fairing, but interesting in it's own way. Anyone have any clues as to manufacturer etc?

Cheers folks.

CB500/550 / Brake Disc Measurements - does anyone know..?
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:47:42 AM »
Evening All!

I'm currently pondering brake setups and was hoping someone out there might know a few CB550 disc measurements?

Basically, I'm after the internal diameter, the bolt pattern diameter (pierced circle diameter) and offset for the 550 disc.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers Folks.
