Title: fork seals
Post by: mickwinf on May 09, 2021, 03:28:59 PM
I have a leak from my fork seal on my 550. They were replaced when i rebuilt the forks and done about 60 miles since, the fork leg is not pitted. I also had a leak at the allen screw at the bottom that holds the stanchion in which i thought was the copper washer so replaced that and thought that was job done. now i am not sure if it was fluid leaking from the top seal and running down or was actually the washer? So any recommended suppliers of seals and any tips on fitting, although it seems easy enough and done it before but why is it leaking so bad?

I have seen leaks round the outside of the seal where the casing was damaged when removing old seal. Could easily be just a bad seal i have not heard of any realy bad ones but they may be out there

Are the ones you fitted the double spring type Mick, with the dust spring on top and the oil spring underneath?

Hi Bryan, fork legs look undamaged but will check closely. Julie i can not remember what the seals looked like think i got them from ebay. Do you supply them? is it worth paying Honda price? the other side seems fine.

No, I don't have stock of the Mick but I know we have fitted the Honda double sprung ones to most of our bikes.

Was it the 750F2 that you use Julie as it has the double seals whereas the 500/550 only have single seals.
Never had a 750 F2 Ken but I fitted the double sprung ones my 400/4 which were NOS OEM seals

I fitted these Mick they’re slightly deeper than the Honda ones so if it is leaking from the outside it will have more chance of sealing

ok i have just taken it apart and there are some gouges where the seal sits, as Bryan said possibly from removing the old seals, not me! so what do i do, try to fill with chemical metal and file down or use some sealant around the outer edge of the seal. Or get another fork bottom?
