Title: CB500 Four 1976 For sale.
Post by: MCTID on April 25, 2022, 10:51:51 PM
I have recently bought this 1976 CB500 Four. It's a nice bike BUT it has developed a noise which I think is the Camshaft Chain. It could be something else, but that is probably the problem ! I bought it to run over the Summer and was planning to upgrade it over the Winter, but I'm not keen on losing out over the Summer riding and I just want a daily (weekly) rider. If I have to rebuild it then I'll have to do it, but before I do, I thought I'd see if anyone on the sohc Forum wants to take it on.

It's an Import (obviously) with a 73 K3 Engine (21781XX) in a KI Frame (20865XX - from what I can make out) and TBH it's been a bit 'unloved', but it's a sound investment as I'm asking £3500 or best (sensible) offer. It has the makings of a nice bike with new DSS Saddle, Battery, Tyres, Oil & Air Filters and it actually rides well. With a bit of TLC, it could be a Keeper.

P/X is possible but it will need to be about as light (200Kg) and about as powerful (50BHP) as this bike is.

I may be able to deliver within a reasonable distance of Lytham St Annes for a fair sum. I have the V5 and it doesn't require Tax or an MOT due to it's age.

If you need more information or photos, just ask.....I don't bite.

Best regards,
Alan.

I can give you the best way if you want to try.

I followed a vid on adjusting the Camchain tension. Cold engine and NOT running....I rotated engine to TDC then on a bit more till the spring post was in line, loosened the adjuster screw locknut........hopefully the blade then tensioned itself.....held the adjuster screw with a screwdriver and tightened the locknut again. It's improved things a bit, but it's still rattling away.

TBH the Honda Manual didn't say much about the adjustment so any advice is much appreciated.

Have you tried synchronising the carbs, if they're out it can accentuate camchain/ primarychain rattles.

It could be that the primary chain damping rubbers have gone really hard and it's allowing the primary chain to rattle around on it's sprockets.

Do it again but instead of putting the engine in a particular position try to turn the crank clockwise and hold it in a position where it is just about to turn so the front run of the cam chain is tight, sounds difficult but you can frrl when its about to turn

Thanks for the help and advice Folks.......much appreciated. I'm having a couple of days away with the Boss.........I'm collecting the parts I sent for chroming - only to be met with a price that you'd think they were going to be 'Gold Plated' !! So I said 'Thanks but no thanks' !

I'm particularly peed off with this particular Chrome platers because some of Roy Halls CB750 parts are in the 'Job Lot' so I have wasted a few weeks for him and his build, but he's been good about it and and agreed that we shouldn't be 'Blackmailed by Suppliers' !

I'll have another go at adjusting the Cam chain, but it's looking like engine out and all that involves........or maybe I'll just put the bike on E Bay and see what happens.

Wish me luck !

For cam chain dont need engine out as you can strip to base gasket in frame

For more detailed inspection, pull the rocker cover to see the chain and assess condition.

If you can lift it away substantially from the cam sprocket (half way round on the teeth engagement) then it's knackered.

If ok, look down barrel to see if the tensioner is doing anything.

Is it 'AW' Alan ... I voted with my feet with him after he messed me about last time. Shame because I think I was the 1st to use him on here and I have  had some good work done by him in the past. I discovered he wasn't even doing the actual chroming when i 1st used him ..it was being done by 'Marquerestore'.

The place I have been using since (if you need to know who it is then PM me) , is spot on ....  but long lead times .... I wouldn't go to anyone else now.

No it wasn't AW Ash, I have my chroming with him at present. It appears that he has fitted new tanks etc and has taken it in house now. I will PM you about the chromers tonight.
