Title: Chrome Vinyl Wrap
Post by: XS850 on November 19, 2022, 01:26:00 PM
Just a query, with the costs and problems associated with re-chroming now, has anyone tried chrome vinyl wrap on a Chainguard at all or will it look really “bodged”?

Chrome effect powder coating looks pretty good - on my 400 hubs I had powder coated  alloy finish they look pretty good so the chrome might be good too.

On my 400 I powder coated all the previously chromed cycle parts. Looks pretty good - in my opinion - and much cheaper.

Thank you Ted & Sean, have thought about powder coat but not sure how “chrome” the chrome will look.  I usually do all my own small parts powder coating but the Chainguard is a bit big for my oven and it’ll need all the original chrome removing first.  I’ll give “wrapping” a go first and see how it comes out then maybe move on to having it powder coated.

The only problem with chrome wrap is it doesn't even look like chrome once lacquered.

Had a 750 oil tank powdered in chrome powder, looked good until they put a clear coat on and then it just looked grey. All this chrome effect coating is ok for indoor use but, it dulls as soon as you put a clear coat on  ;)

I had a CB1300 complete header setup done in Kermacrome which is chrome Ceramic coating. It looked pretty good TBH, not anywhere near as bright as chrome but it lasted and never rusted. It did dull down over time but it was easy to get it to shine again, a little wire wool and solvol. Was still looking great when a very nice lady didn't see me coming and wrote the bike off, didn't even say sorry. To this day I have no idea what she looks like.
