I see that new faces are available for the clocks and I see that some folks here have sent the clocks out for refurb. Has anyone here purchased the faces and installed them "at home?" I assume the big issue is the chrome ring - specifically removing it without damaging it so badly that it looks bad/can't be recrimped in place.
I don't have a conceptual problem with sending them out to a pro but I don't like to see the bike out of service for an extended period and I prefer doing all work myself if possible.
The clocks work perfectly and look OK but the faded red on the tach bothers me! My goal with this bike, in addition to it being my daily rider is to have it look as original as possible but not "brand new." Basically I want it to look like it might have with normal riding maybe 12-18 months after original purchase.

Leave them as they are then. If you do fit new faces, which I know some members have done but Peter Horton does it much better, then the clocks will look brand new, which you don't want. Peter will also service clocks without changing the look of them but you say yours work fine, so you don't need that either.
The bike is nearly 50 years old, unless you change every single part to OEM NOS original parts, which is impossible, and financial suicide, there will always be parts that show their age and I think thats lovely. Even on full top notch restorations we always leave a few parts that are totally 100% original from the day that bike left the factory.
If its a daily rider, it's soon going to get battle scars and war wounds, if its a show pony trailer queen, then that is a totally different thing.

Personally, I wanted my clocks to look good (as you look at them a lot!!) and so I re-furbished them myself but used the new faces from cb750 faces (which are excellent)
I made tooling for my lathe so I could re-seal them back together properly. When I'm back from France I'll post a picture.

Removing the chromed crimp ring isn't that difficult.

Recrimping is a pain in the rear if you don't have the right tooling.

Here is my jig I made when I refurbed my clocks several years ago. If your clocks work fine, cosmetic refurb reasonably easy (I built my 750k2 from boxes of bits so didn't know that they had damping issues - see post)
