Hi All
I've just had RFL reminder through for my 400, its 58 squids, is that right?. It's more than I pay for the bloody bike insurance which is Fully Comp any bike any size. When does the classic excemption come in ? >:( >:(
-
Is it 1972 or 1973 this year? I will have to check.
-
72 or 73 I've got a bloody long time to wait, mine is a 78 !!!
-
It's before 1st January 1974. Yep, non of the 400's are exempt yet. I have a very rare, vary nice 1971 CB500 Four that will be up for sale soon.
-
I suppose what your saying Trig is that if I buy your lovely 500/4, it will be Tax exempt. Good idea but it may be cheaper for me to just give HM the 58 quid for my Honda RFL ;D ;D ;D
-
Just Pay the £58. The problem you have is that your bike is 408cc. If it was under 400cc you would only have to pay £38.
-
Trigger, be sure to put up lots of photos of it before selling. I'll be interested to know what it makes too.
Cheers
Matt

80 quid for a 750 and I'm on limited mileage insurance (Lynbrooke). Who are you insured with Julie?
-
Im with The Post Office this year Tom, seems to tick all the boxes for me, £56.25
-
I'm insured with Lynbrooke, they were able to ditch the limmited milage, I have about 5 bikes insured with them with my wife and dad named riders on the policy. They seem pretty good about tailoring a policy to suit what you want. I really originally sought them outbas they do allow buy back salvage and sidecar cover and my 500/4 is one bike I would repair regardless if written off, I have every part I could need so really wanted that option for that bike. There was no way I was going to accept limited milage, that bike was averaging over 25k a year as my only transport for quite a while.
-
Hi All,
Talking insurance, anyone out there know of any cheap insurance for a "modified" bike, mine seems to attract 3-4 times the amount quoted for a standard 400/4.
One time of day, the quotes were based on engine size, they now appear to be accompanied with the old intake of breath as mentioned previously, and I only want it two or three months a year.
-
I always tell people to try the post office insurance but, always worth shopping around.
The best years ago was the rider policy that norwich union used to do.

I'm paying about double that for my two bikes, 3k miles/yr each. Also, if I ride another bike it has to be at least 20 yrs old ::)
February is renewal so I'll bargain/shop around. Inc Post Office!
-
Carole Nash charge me £170 for my Tiger 800 and £25 for the 500/4
Last renewal they asked me whether it had ABS (the 500/4 that is!)

The Norwich Union Rider policy was one of the best. I wonder if there is anything like that available these days ?. After the N.U. policy finished I used to ride all my bikes on a Motor Trade policy. Easy, as you could ride anything but 3rd party road risks only. That was ok for the old heaps of junk but I had a 3 month old CBR 600 written off in a flood about 1990, I mean totally wrecked, and the insurance company wouldn't pay out. These days you can actually have fully comp on bikes on Motor Trade Policies but even at my great age it's about £1400 per year >:( >:(

We all had NU Rider Policies when I was at Uni and rode each other's bikes as a matter of course...

Wow, look at those fairings.............and the hairstyles and clothes. The Uni Students I teach sometimes still look similar today, except their trousers are a bit baggier !!! :o :o

Somewhere I have a photo of me and some friends when we were Student Nurses in 1980 outside the Nurses Home at Pembury Hospital in Tunbridge Wells. There were 4 of us with Bikes, I think mine was the KZ 400 in the pic, and my friend had a 400 of some sort and we had the tank resprayed in pearlescent pink with a picture of the Pink Panther painted on it. Seemed a good idea at the time !!!
-
I too had a NU rider policy, then went to Footman James who eventually hiked up the price, so I moved with Peter James after he left FJ. I pay £156 for 7 bikes including a 1500 'Wing. All on agreed value and totalling nearly £20k, unlimited mileage - but I am VERY old (66 next)
I also have a US import 400/4 included which I bought and registered 10 years ago - a very early one only about 500 numbers in from the start. The DVLA in their wisdom always went back to the beginning of the year on imports, so mine ended up with an M reg. 'Hoist with their own petard' it means it will be tax exempt from Jan 1st 2015 - a result!! I sold this bike to my cousin in Hull about 8 years ago, but bought it back very recently and I'm just tidying it up for next season. I've put my spare brand new Varnish blue tank and side panels on it, plus a brand new front mudguard I've had for 25 years - from DS for about £45 then!
-
thanks all
My insurance is with CIA,Rugby, not the american one,(well,I don't think they are )
about £90 for classic policy,
just sent email to Lynbrook to see how they look
-
Bennetts do a multibike policy, may get a quote from them next time as well
-

Steve, those bike's look like they have been taken from the Mad Max film.
-
Funny you should say that Trig, I did mention a couple of years back that in Steve's avatar pic he has more than a passing resemblance to the "Toecutter" from the Mad Max film, which he denied!

Sooo.... just following this up on a couple of threads.
Julie: tried the Post Office but they told me they don't do multi-bike policies... after a lengthy proposal question and answer session >:(
Got limited mileage lifted from my Lynbrooke policy as per.
RFL: Researched a CBF125 for my son. Has 8 months tax left to run. OK I know it's only 17 quid but since Oct 2014 RFL is not transferable to the new registered keeper >:( >:( so it seems... HMG saves cash by no longer sending out tax discs (OK) but reaps more cash by wiping out residual months. Little b*ggers :o

Not exactly Tom, you'll get a cheque for all the complete months remaining - it's the partial months you lose. They'll still make shed loads doing that, though >:(

Ah OK. I've read it properly now. The previous owner gets the cash back - that seems fair as far as it goes I suppose, but as you say there is unused months/backdated start either side they will profit from under the new scheme.
-
But they always have profited from it anyway. If you sent the tax back for a refund you only ever got whole months value back.I think I will try Lynbrook and Bennets when my Insurance is up for renewal. Will definately need a multi policy.

Try the post office for insurance, cheap ;)

Back at the original query (!) this document explains the VED / RFL exemption stuff:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/293910/TIIN_2507_8011_40_year_rolling_exemption_for_classic_vehicles_.pdf
My 400/4 (a late F2, appears to be a UK model) was for some reason not registered until 1981, although as far as I can find out they were only manufactured from 1975-77.
Year of manufacture from a GOV.UK Vehicle Enquiry was also shown as 1981.
I have just been through the process of getting this changed to 1977 with the help of a dating letter from the VJMC (Honda UK were no help).
So hopefully, as the exemption is supposedly based on year of manufacture, I should qualify a bit sooner.

Yes Trig but the Post office don't do multi policies......keep up ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

You insure one and then they charge £30 for everyone added, as long as it is a lower cc. ;)

There are always benefits to getting older, from the insurance point of view that is ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Julie, there is old, methuselah then me, At least that's the way I feel right now after finishing at 06:30 fror the week and booking 60 hours
-
Oh dear Bryan. And if they are all night hours then I do know how tiring they can be.
-
Must get another classic insurer I think.
Bike tax is annoying and wrong ! .....I compensate by running a zero taxed car !
-
Julie, for the past 20ish years its been start at 18:30 and finish anything up to 15 hours later.
Remember, if you got it a truck brought it
-
For reasons that aren't important and not nefarious I was sitting outside Hatfield police station the other Saturday at midnight and noticing the trucks barreling up and down the old A1 (long since bypassed by the tunnel) and I thought to myself, gosh those drivers... where did they journey from and where are they going to; carrying what??
Keep safe Bryan
-
Remember, if you got it a truck brought it
Assuming Julie drinks cider and reads magazines...
[Isn't that what you ship around Bryan?]

I'm a typical Nurse Steve, I drink anything and read anything as long as it's free ;D ;D

Plus Inbev, Mars, premier foods, paper, Nestle, B &Q tiles, compost just to name a few mate
-
My insurance is now £170 for 5 bikes including Ntv 650, 500/4 and a motley collection of 125cc stuff, for myself, my wife or my dad, insured with Lynbrooke. Multi bike and multi rider. Last time I spoke to bennetts they would not offer either. Adding a 125 for the last 5 months of my policy a few years ago cost literally nothing. The ntv added for about 3 months of the policy was about £1.79 or somit daft. Given I am 33 - wife is younger I should add before she hits me I think that is pretty competative.
-
I see mention of the old Norwich Union policy in earlier posts - I used that for many years, and when it changed to Aviva I just carried on...... I still have the same policy number an' all. It's a little more expensive than it was, but there's a broker here in Shetland so it's worth the extra bit to be able to actually talk to someone........Cars and house are with the NFU, for much the same reason - I'd have the bikes with them as well if they did bike policies
The drawback, such as it is, is that it's limited to four bikes, so the Fanny-B had to come off it when I got the Honda last year.
-
I'm with Peter James, 2 bikes comes to around 80quid. You may have to join the VJMC though.
