CB350/400 / Still carb troubles
« on: September 04, 2023, 06:15:31 PM »
Back in February I posted saying I think I'd sorted my troubles with carbs not shutting down . In April I went for a Boyer electronic ignition complete with micro coils and I still have the same problem with the carbs !
There's quite a long time between posts because my wife was very ill with lung cancer and sadly passed on 30th June , so shed time was the last thing on my mind!
However one of her last wishes was "Get that bl##dy bike sorted!"  So I'm now back in the mood to try and sort it.

From the top :-
Boyer fitted and bike starts/runs. Using a timing light its correct.
Tappets adjusted.
Have to fiddle with idle adjuster to set at 1200rpm .
Idle mixture screw set at 2 turns out.
Plugs very sooty
Open throttle and revs soar and doesn't drop back to 1200rpm when released. Have to fiddle with idle adjuster to bring back down.
Sprayed carb manifold connectors to barrels with Carb cleaner and no effect , so not drawing in air, better not they're new - good
Remove carb tops and sprayed carb cleaner in but slides don't appear to be sticking either.
I've noticed that if you press the top of brass hexagonal nut on the carbs this will reduce the revs but too hard and it stalls FWIW.
Prior all carbs stripped, ultrasonic cleaned, carb cleaner on jets with jet brushes etc etc retaining original brass and new seals from NJ.
Bench synced at least twice.
Standard air box and new air filter

I've no idea what to do next! I have an old lawn mower, never serviced, starts first time every spring,  think I'll put engine from that in instead.

To me it's pretty obviously  carb related, (I think  ::)) as there is good spark and timing is ok. Not got to the stage with setting Boyer to full advance  yet which requires 4500rpm as revs all over the place.
Cheers peeps! 8)

CB350/400 / Front disc brake adjustment
« on: May 10, 2023, 06:10:56 PM »
Where the old girl had been standing over winter, the disc brake had seized on. So drained fluid,  stripped,   cleaned calipers, fitted new pads c/w new washer behind floating pad, new fluid and bled satisfactorily.  However I can't adjust the gap between fixed pad and disc   no matter how much I twiddle it. With calipers off the brake arm moves freely and is not seized.
I've noticed the floating pad projects 5mm or so out of it's caliper, should it go fully home after using the brake? I renewed o ring in calipers and there appears to be no fluid bypassing the pad. I cleaned up the piston which was gunged wicked   , it looked OK? Can't work out what's going on 😤

CB350/400 / Fuel pipe size 5mm or 5.5mm?
« on: April 09, 2023, 02:03:31 PM »
Thought I'd replace fuel pipe,so searched on here and found it needs I.d. of 5.5mm which I've purchased. However it seemed to push on too easily,  so checked diameter of fuel tap after little bump in brass connector and is 5mm , so do I need 5.5mm or 5mm, don't fancy petrol everywhere.  Could be over thinking it?!

CB350/400 / Using carbtune.
« on: April 04, 2023, 01:29:37 PM »
A mate has kindly lent me his carbtune kit. Seems straight forward but the instructions say to blank off balance pipes on carbs , does this mean the 2 over flow pipes that come from carbs 2 and 3 ? Or not applicable in my case ?

CB350/400 / Electronic ignition choices
« on: February 25, 2023, 01:04:25 PM »
I'm considering going to electronic ignition on my 400. I'm tempted by the Boyer with the micro coils option- has anyone tried this? Not cheap but looks straightforward install albeit junking old coils.
From other posts on here I gather the Piranha system isn't always successful.
Does anyone have any recommendations or don't buy that comments on any other systems?

CB350/400 / So what does this do , in carb set up?
« on: February 11, 2023, 05:49:20 PM »
Out of interest, can any one enlighten me to the function of the adjuster(?) in the attached pics. I can't find any reference to it in any of my manuals ?

CB350/400 / More carb troubles, engine won't return to idle revs
« on: October 09, 2022, 12:10:39 PM »
The saga continues. I've refitted carbs after setting sliders using BrianJ's method, and others and seemed to achieve what was required.  Bike starts fine and when warm ease off choke and all ok. But when revved up to say 3000rpm the throttles close properly on handlebars, but revs do not drop back to tickover 1200rpm. This can be achieved by using main idle screw, but when revved again the same happens meaning using idle screw again - could make for interesting riding! When revved higher say 4000rpm still won't drop back past 2000 without using idle screw.
I have fitted main air box to back of carbs but not yet connected up to filter box (suspected I'd be taking them off again!) and air filter not fitted but this shouldn't make any difference at this stage I believe. Carbs have been stripped/cleaned and replaced brass float rods and carb float height set.
Any ideas? Anyone? Please !

CB350/400 / High revving idle
« on: September 12, 2022, 03:30:04 PM »
Finally got timing sorted on rebuilt engine and couldn't resist little shakedown ride, you know how it is ! Gearbox smooth, clutch needs adjustment but easy to do.
However despite setting idle screw at 1200rpm , albeit bit lumpy, went well. Until I had to stop at junction   revs hit 3000rpm with throttle closed and undone idle screw so wasn't touching , confusing 😐!
Otherwise rode lovely but obviously needs sorting, even rolling off throttle didn't lower revs  then slowly eased off.
I'm guessing balance carbs? They have been stripped ,  cleaned new o rings, courtesy of Nurse Julie, and replaced brass rod for carb floats. Float heights reset to 21mm too. Am I right about balancing  please don't tell me got to take damn things off again 😒

CB350/400 / Timing light gun/strobe
« on: September 09, 2022, 02:34:38 PM »
Have recently bought this, see below, and wasn't until it arrived, I discovered that it's not suitable for motorcycles, didn't read all the sales blurb doh.
So, my question is what do you peep's use? Don't want a super duper whizzo jobbie. just something middle of the range, reliable.

Tried it but doesn't pick up on#1 cylinder but does on #4, probably why not suitable for cickles?

CB350/400 / Refitting exhaust and stud for collars too short 🤔
« on: July 14, 2022, 01:57:52 PM »
Just in the throes of refitting exhaust and I'm finding that there is insufficient thread to secure the collar. The studs were removed because I had some blasting done to clean up engine.
The studs are 47mm long, as part manual says for F model.
The stud is screwed fully home in the head   but if I wind it out a bit the collar fits fine. The thread length on the stud is the same both ends, so it's not in wrong way round.
Should I just back out stud from head enough to secure collars then tighten?

CB350/400 / Stiff old wiring !
« on: July 07, 2022, 10:48:11 AM »
Following rebuild engine back in frame and a battle with carb air box , all seemed to be going well BUT having a bit of aggro with the loom around air filter box area, it's the original loom and has obviously hardened into it's position over the years  any tips on how to make it more malleable/ pliable to allow some connections to actually reach. A gentle application with heat gun springs to mind but are there other tricks?
Other than purchase a new loom 🤣

CB350/400 / Don't think that's a stripped helicoil
« on: June 11, 2022, 05:54:20 PM »
Further to my last post on stripped helicoils. I now don't think it is the case.
In the attached picture the "material " on the left is what was attached to bolt thread when I removed it  next to it is a new m6 helicoil for comparison.
1) the piece on left is not magnetis, ie not metal like a helicoil
2) Appears finer material than a helicoil.
3) If I offer up the bolt to the hole it still screws in 🤔 although not torqued up as not on the engine.
Any ideas and no I didn't over tighten it when I put it in.
Is it possible to pull out the thread from alloy or something else going wrong 🤔
