CB350/400 / Helicoils pulled out, replace or go size up?
« on: June 06, 2022, 10:24:48 PM »
So cam shaft in, see earlier post. While torquing up the 4 bolts on cam cover, 3 wouldn't tighten. So undid them and out come 3 helicoils installed by previous owner I presume.  The 4 bolts  are 6mm x 60mm and are the ones that fit around the cam chain sprocket in the cam cover.
Just one thing after another! 😤
So question is , can they just be replaced by putting in same size or do I need to go up a size, although not a lot of room for that ?
Fear I know the answer 🙄

CB350/400 / Reinstalling cam shaft.
« on: June 06, 2022, 10:55:24 AM »
Rebuild underway and now camshaft won't quite go in. I'm aware that lower end of camchain can sometimes be not quite fully on crank end and needs to be "wiggled" about to seat correctly,  well been wiggling for days. Any tips ??
I can get the camshaft in to the point where the last cam lobe will not quite fit under the cam sprocket but it's so close 😠. Persuasion only jams the flanges that bolt to sprocket.

Barrels rebored to +.25 and pistons/rings supplied to suit.Bit of a fight to get barrels on but now pistons won't move up or down when turning crank. Moved fine before barrels went on, stripping back down to look but any ideas,  please help me before I turn to drink !

CB350/400 / It won't go in - primary shaft that is!
« on: May 14, 2022, 05:36:12 PM »
Rebuild takes place slowly and have just bonded crankcase together and all torqued up nicely.
However when fitting the primary shift via oil pump side as advised it won't go in .I've fitted a new primary chain and it's as if it's too tight but only by a gnats ! Misalignment is so small but enough to only get shaft through first bearing.
Any ideas?
Iffy primary chain, albeit DS ?
Horrible feeling cases need to come apart for closer look, anyone had similar when fitting new primary chain. Although rotates crank fine if using nut on alternator end .

CB350/400 / Jointing compound , not quite sure if it goes here?

Just about to apply jointing compound to crankcase and not sure if it goes here, as shown on attached pic ?

CB350/400 / Aluminium engine hangers.
« on: April 10, 2022, 04:18:05 PM »
Some while ago I acquired in  box of bits, some aluminium engine hangers  the triangular ones at front of engine, that connect to front down pipe. While I'm waiting for rebore was having a sort out and thought bet they'd polish nice, and they have. But never seen them before,   they are exact copies of the originals.
In my head aluminium is a strong lightweight metal , would they cope with weight/ stresses etc while in use.
I know not standard but I do like a bit of being.

CB350/400 / Gasket paper instead of gaskets
« on: April 07, 2022, 04:23:39 PM »
I have some left over gasket paper, any problems with using it for the gasket for the sump pan and Air breather box on top of the rocker box. ?

CB350/400 / Crankcase bolts, replace or get plated.
« on: April 06, 2022, 11:46:02 AM »
Having had cases blasted, seems a shame to reuse old bolts. DS is quite expensive and some of the 8mm UBS bolts discontinued 😏
Are there alternative suppliers?
Is stainless steel better or worse?
Getting the old ones redone probably cost as much as new bolts.
It's not a show pony but seems a shame to spoil a ship for a halfpenny of tar , as they say.

CB350/400 / Cleaning crankcase mating surfaces
« on: March 19, 2022, 10:35:35 PM »
Any tips on removing old gasket cement from crankcase bodies before re assembly?

25
Barrels, head etc all removed but is it possible to remove top half of crankcase without too much trouble , my back these days isn't as good as it was and no-one to help with lift if cases together. The case are all going to be stripped out and blasted anyway so if gears etc fall out of position it's not really an issue.

CB350/400 / O rings alternative suppliers
« on: March 02, 2022, 03:52:34 PM »
Just working out my shopping list for some bits and O ring prices with DS seem a bit steep. Does anyone use any other supplier ? Or just contact a bearing/o ring supplier with the sizes?
Do they need to be a special material etc?
Any tips/suppliers would be great!

Misc / Open / Parts washer fluid, what does everyone use?
« on: February 15, 2022, 03:07:09 PM »
Having just replaced the spent fluid in my parts washer and cleaned out the inch or so of sludge,. I need to replace the fluid, I'd prefer not to use paraffin, but the options when googling degreasers are various as are the comments.
So what's the general consensus of what's best to use.

I've cleaned up the valves very carefully with oven cleaner and a brass brush in a dremel,  if I replace the guides with new can I reuse old valves if lapped in properly on the head.

CB350/400 / Soldering temperatures.
« on: December 27, 2021, 08:57:17 AM »
Santa bought me a new soldering iron, as I'm doing some electrical work but unlike my old one this has a variable temperature gauge. For routine joining /changing bullets and connectors what would be ideal temperature in centigrade?
Nice to have the choice rather than just get the point hot! , like my old Halfords cheepie.
