Project Board / Honda CB750K5 Restoration by Royhall
« on: December 29, 2021, 09:06:08 AM »
Don't blame me you voted for this, well, except for OddJob. Steve can you block OddJob from this thread, thanks. ;D ;D

The bike hasn't actually arrived yet and is at present in a container in Valencia, Spain. It has just been loaded onto the ship MSC Sandra after doing it's Atlantic leg on the MSC Maria Elena. For those of you with absolutely bugger all to do this is the container tracking number   #TRHU7426738

The bike was actually bought off eBay via a well known outfit called Flashback Enterprises. This felt like taking a bit of a chance as the money had to be paid upfront via bank transfer (MoneyCorp). There is absolutely no safety net in that way of payment, except for a few clauses in the MoneyCorp transfer agreement. But I decided to take a chance as they came recommended by a member on here as well as other places. They also have very good feedback on eBay.

Before buying I asked a lot of questions via email and got good answers except for a few he didn't know the answer to. When you look at the pictures it is clear the bike has been apart and a few parts are loose. The engine has been out and put back in? The big question he couldn't answer was, has it had a chain break and broken cases. So I just had to take a chance on that.

It looks rough as it is, but try to look at it that the exhausts would have been rotted out, the seat knackered and the paintwork needing redoing anyway. So a set of replica pipes, a DSS seat, and a Yamiya tank set sorts the problem without any work involved.

The asking price on eBay was £1700 but he accepted an offer a bit lower than that so that was good. Looking at others for sale (and after visiting DK's in person) the present going price for a project is 3.5k to 4k. Then you still have to do the exhausts and paint etc so at £1500 it's not looking too bad. There will be additional port charges, VAT, NOVA, and delivery charges that amount to around £300. The way I look at that is the new exhausts and tank set are as good as free which is a good starting point for a project.

Here's some scary pictures: Steve, please don't block OddJob I was only kidding.

Project Board / New 750K5 project thread.
« on: December 27, 2021, 01:14:56 PM »
Hi all. My next project, a CB750K5, is on it's way and was just wondering if anybody would be interested in me doing a rebuild thread similar to the 350F and 450 Bomber. Not sure anything new is going to be gleaned from it though as 750's have been done a thousand times, plus it is a lot of effort to do (which I don't really mind). Let me know what you think. Cheers Roy.

CB750 / 750 Gasket set.
« on: December 17, 2021, 01:58:15 PM »
I have had a lot of gasket sets over the years of differing quality. I am needing a set for a CB750K5 and was wondering what the best available set is at the moment, and is the head gasket from that set safe to use or do I need to scour the earth for a genuine one. Thanks.

Misc / Open / Looking for a project
« on: October 16, 2021, 10:00:41 AM »
Morning all.
I have been looking for a decent priced project for a while now, I have tried auctions, Stafford, DK's and many many other places. I have in the main been looking at overpriced scrap iron.
So having been on here for many years I thought I would ask what you guys have lurking in the back of the garage. As I'm really too large to look at anything below 500cc that needs to be the smallest (that said if it's a real bargain I could be swayed).
Cash waiting for the right bike.
Cheers Roy.

Misc / Open / Please don't panic buy.
« on: September 24, 2021, 02:15:48 PM »
Just heard on the radio a government Johnny telling us not to panic buy fuel because the problem is just a tiny handful of petrol stations that have run out.
Five minutes later I drove past a petrol station with a line of cars waiting that stretched for about 500 yards. On passing the line I noted that about three quarters of the drivers were pensioners.
So soon the people that need a vehicle for work won't be able to get fuel whilst pensioners cars sit at home with full tanks.
I'm sorry but what a bunch of selfish me me me pigs.

This is an insane view from the chinguard of Peter Hickmans helmet. I know these roads very well but he's going that fast it's almost impossible to know where he is at times. Enjoy.

This has been on eBay for over a week and not hit 3k yet. Bargain for someone who wants to get into the classic scene without breaking the bank.

Misc / Open / Dodgy eBay sellers
« on: May 31, 2021, 11:20:03 AM »
Just noticed this guy on eBay  SHAKH_8466  What he's selling is way too cheap and copies of other current listings. Clearly a scammer. I thought I would report them to eBay but after 30 minutes of very frustrating searching I cannot find a way to do it. No wonder people get ripped off on this rubbish site, they are not the slightest bit bothered about scammers clearly. Does anyone know how to do this?

Misc / Open / Slow DVLA
« on: May 19, 2021, 01:44:29 PM »
In case your waiting for the DVLA to return your V5C mine arrived this morning. I taxed the bike on 1st April at the Post Office who sent the V5 to DVLA to change to 'Historic'. So that's taken them 7 weeks to turn around. My Bomber paperwork went back a week after and that's not back yet so they are at least consistently slow.

The Black Bomber Board / Black Bomber not charging
« on: May 18, 2021, 02:30:21 PM »
The Black Bomber is running okay in every respect except that it isn't charging. Voltage across the battery stays the same with engine running or not. With the multimeter 10A in series with the battery positive it's showing a negative reading ie. no charging. I disconnected the output from the rectifier and it measure just 2V when the engine revs. Disconnected the regulator and tried again, exactly the same. Can I check the output from the alternator at the harness where it connects to the rectifier as getting to the connections for the alternator itself is almost impossible. If I disconnect rectifier and regulator what reading should I be looking for with the engine running, AC I assume. I'm way out of my comfort zone with this so any help would be appreciated.

Misc / Open / Senior moment of the week.
« on: April 17, 2021, 05:55:19 PM »
I am just rebuilding the top end of my GS1000 after refurbing the parts. I arrived at the bit I hate namely refitting the valves. Anyone who has done a Honda head will know the retaining collets can be quite tricky to locate on the valve, well a bucket and shim head is even harder as there is no room at all for fingers. Anyway, after about and hour and a half of sweating and swearing I finally got the last valve done. After some Yes Yes Yes and air punching I decided to clear the bench, just to the left I noticed a small plastic bag with eight high quality Viton valve stem seals within. Yes you guessed it I had forgotten to fit the stem seals. Tomorrow I get to do the whole rotten job all over again. Old age does nothing good to a person.

Misc / Open / Mr Proops strikes again.
« on: March 27, 2021, 09:20:25 AM »
Just a little heads up warning for anyone in the London area (or anywhere else) thinking of buying a classic bike. I have a Suzuki GS1000 in my garage that came from Rick Proops emporium in London known as RAPsuperbikes (you may have seen the full page adverts in the classic bike mags).

The engine on this bike had a top end rebuild by Mr Proops mechanic before it was sold. The bike has covered 800 miles since and is making a dreadful noise, smoking badly, and leaking oil from the head gasket. On stripping this is what I found.

Re-honed bores with new rings. On measuring the piston to bore clearance was between 7 and 8 thou, should be 2 thou.
The cylinder head nuts were loose, nipped at best.
The inlet valve guides were completely shot.
The wrong head gasket had been used.
The valves sealing surfaces were regressed past saving.
Two valve stem seals had been torn.
Two exhaust studs were in stripped threads with some goo holding them in.
The cylinder head gasket was blown and leaking oil and combustion products.

This bike was advertised and sold as having had a full top end rebuild. So buyer beware eh
