CB500/550 / Re: Tax and the 40 year old rule
« on: December 06, 2015, 05:45:56 PM »
I changed my 500/4 tax class to "historic" last year and whilst the DVLA and Post Office were both helpful, it took almost a month and involved extensive discussions to achieve this. The reason given (at least in my case) was that the Post Office is dependant upon the DVLA supplying information of eligible vehicles for the change to take place. My 500 showed on the DVLA data base as eligible, however not on the one used by the Post Office and, as no manual input is possible by Post Office counter staff, although I had an e-mail from the DVLA confirming my claim, "nothing could be done" by them.

Eventually it emerged that the Post Office not only use a totally separate data base from the DVLA, but also the updates are manually set and take place at completely different intervals from those of the DVLA!

Finally I was told to send all applicable documents to the DVLA, who reissued them in the correct tax class.

Interestingly, although I offered to pay for the year's tax at the Post Office (I needed the bike to attend a classic Show) they would not let me do so because of the DVLA letter confirming its right to be taxed in the "Historic Vehicle" category.

Oddjob, please let me know your price. I will send a cheque, as I don't (at least as yet) have a Pay Pal account.

I had real problems finding a kick - start return spring for the CB 500/4 (I now keep a spare) and am still looking for a set of rear wheel cush drive rubbers. I had a clutch push rod made some years ago, as I could not find a replacement for that and know others who are still looking for these same items.

I use paraffin from a spray gun, followed by compressed air to remove any remaining dirt and dry things off. It seems to work for me!

For interests sake, you might like to know that the 500/4 has covered more than 70,000 miles! The 750 has, I believe covered around 45,000 miles.

Tom, afraid that the third is a Kawasaki Versys 1000 GT, for my holidays etc. I have had quite a lot of "classics" (i.e. Benelli 750 Sei, Honda 350/4, Yamaha YR5 to name but a few) but always return to Honda at the end.

I almost bought a CB1100EX earlier this year (my brother had the first version in 2013) but in the end, realised that as a long - distance touring bike, it just didn't have the things that I needed such as heated grips (a £600.00 extra) and proper, fitted luggage, as well as weather protection. I also believe that when I am away, whilst "locking and leaving" a bike like the Versys poses no particular risks, something like the CB1100 might attract too much attention. In the end, my friend bought the bike in question in July.

Plenty of wet days and tractors in Norfolk (my brother lives at Ledbury and my mother near to Ross-On Wye, so I know that area well too) however I always at least wipe the bikes over after each ride. This only takes 10 -15 minutes and keeps things fresh.

Twice a year, they receive a deep clean, engines sprayed with paraffin at high pressure and then dried with compressed air, whole bike polished etc.

That seems to do the job nicely!

I notice that only two pictures made it, sorry about that, it's down to my lack of skill at this end.

I have tried to attach a few pictures of the Honda's, hope it succeeds! There should be three in total.

I still fit Dunlop TT100's to the Honda and other classics that I've owned. When the 750 comes up for a tyre change, they'll be on that too (although the new Continentals that it was bought with do seem fine).

Many thanks to all for the welcome. The "Flatfour" name came from my BMW K1200 RS, with the "brick" engine. I'll try putting up some pictures shortly, although my skills in this area are not very good!

Hi all, I have just joined this forum having found it only a few days ago. I have a Honda CB500/4 (1974) and CB750/4 (1972). Both are standard (except for a luggage rack and top box) and in as near to factory fresh condition as I can make them, consistent with regular use. I also have a new Kawasaki Versys 1000 GT for holidays (I recently replaced a Kawasaki 1400 GTR with this).

Each of the Honda's covers around 1500 to 2000 miles per year and I do nearly all of my own work on them. In the case of the 750, this has included a partial engine strip to sort an oil leak from the top end of the engine.

I have quite a few parts for both Honda's if someone is desperate to keep a bike on the road, including a set of standard size cylinder barrels for the 750.

If someone is stuck for a translation from Japanese to English, my wife is Japanese and could probably help (she was, at one time responsible for translating technical documents for a Japanese shipping company, so is reasonably familiar with technical terms). We also spend quite a lot of time in Japan ourselves.
