CB350/400 / Headlight main beam warning light - CB400/4 F2
« on: August 29, 2022, 07:02:30 PM »
I've been helping a friend with his very recently purchased CB400/4 F2.

Whilst with me today for carburettor balance etc; he said that he had noticed that the main beam warning light came on with the lamp on dip and then extinguished on main beam. The head light itself works properly, mirroring the switch position.

I suggested that he swapped the main/dipped beam wires over in the headlight, which he did. The headlamp then worked in the opposite sense (i.e. main beam switch position was bringing on the dipped beam and vice versa, however the warning light still came on with dipped beam and went out on main beam.

The bike has been fitted with a new wiring harness (amongst much other work carried out prior to purchase) and, with my very limited electrical skills, I have run out of ideas to help.

Could anyone on here point to the problem?

Many thanks!

From memory, vehicles were supplied in "Knocked Down" or KD form to allow imports to incorporate the necessary local labour content. In some markets (perhaps notably India) the fitment of locally produced engines and other power train components was permitted by the manufacturer, in other markets (New Zealand for example) vehicles were supplied complete and assembled locally. It very much depended upon individual market requirements, although those countries incorporating their own components were subject to regular scrutiny from the UK factory.

At one time, K.D. Kits was such a big concern at Cowley that it had its own rail terminal within the factory.

For a while when I was in Japan, I was assigned to the Honda (car) plant. At the time, Jaguar were developing the AJ6 engine, as we were told that it was a complete new engine or retool for XK engine production, because the tooling was, at 30 years old considered to be too worn to work to tolerance. At Honda, most of the tooling was older than that and the tolerances far tighter, yet they achieved consistently high levels of quality in production.

I have a set of 350 carbs in the shed, if they are the same as those for a 400. I'm not sure of the condition, however I think that the bodies are probably usable.

I'm away until Friday, however if you're not sorted out by then I'll happily take a look for you.

A few weeks ago, I spent quite some time looking for my reading glasses and eventually found them in the fridge!

Worse still, a while ago I bumped into someone that I knew quite well and, as he was on the way to speak at a professional gathering, he asked whether he "looked the part". I said that it would be fine if he took off one of the two ties that he was wearing, to which he replied that his wife must have put the first one on in case he forgot and then whilst sat in the car, he had put another on without noticing.

He is a retired medical professional who held some quite senior posts when working!

Misc / Open / Parcels from Japan
« on: May 23, 2022, 04:35:23 PM »
My wife was due to receive a number of books bought in Japan (so that they are in her own language) and posted by one of her school friends. Today her friend telephoned to say that the Postal Service in Japan have refused to accept them for dispatch.

It seems, after research, that due to the reduction in flights between Japan and Europe caused by their inability to transit Russian Airspace at present, postal services by air mail have been suspended to many countries around the world, including the U.K.

At present, there is no indication of when things might return to normal and parcels in transit are being returned to sender. Presumably, parts sourced from Japan will also be affected?

I do wonder whether this is also an effect of "ETOPS", the distance that twin - engine aircraft have historically been allowed to operate out of range of suitable emergency landing facilities?

CB350/400 / Re: Rear Mudguard Fitting
« on: May 22, 2022, 07:20:50 PM »
I believe that a similar problem existed with replacement rear mudguards for the 750 a few years ago. I fitted one to mine (supplied with the bike) and found the threaded bolt holes to be around 1/2" out of line. After quite a lot of work, it did eventually fit and has been fine since (I needed to grind off the welded nuts, re-drill the holes in the correct place and fit bolts and locknuts).

I use a Davida open - face for riding the older bikes (wide range of colours, mine is red, white and green and has a leather interior) and a Sheoi Neotec 2 for riding the BMW. The Neotec is fitted with the integrated Senna coms system for sat nav and intercom use, whilst with the Davida I use their own separate visor, which works well.

If you do look at Davida, it is, in my opinion important to try them on, as there is little "give" in the lining if you end up with the wrong size (guess how I found out, it cost me another helmet!). The Davida is, though beautifully made and, being open - face easy to fit into the top - box for safe keeping when out and about.

I was looking for an MGB or Stag last year, to make good on a promise made to my wife when we married in 1979 to "buy her a sports car one day."

I worked on both the MGB and Stag during the 1970's as an Apprentice, before joining Jaguar Cars. Remembering the "good old days" weren't really so good where cars are concerned, I bought her a Mercedes SLK.

We've put around 4,000 miles on the car since and, having never really been over interested in owning a sports car, it really is very pleasant and quite impressive to drive. In addition, it has a 15.5 gallon fuel tank and achieves some 48 mpg as driven by us, so in today's troubled times with fuel shortages, will travel a very long way between fuel stops!

It might also be useful to consider the delays in service that have existed in recent times. Our regular parcels to and from Japan have, in the past, taken between four and seven days to arrive. Currently the average is over three weeks, although some take much longer.

Charges have also increased significantly, typically our postage cost (via Royal Mail tracked) was around £15 - £18.00. Now it is more like £25 - £40.00 for the same parcels. As VAT etc. is charged on the whole cost, this has gone up too for items that we receive.

The whole situation has discouraged us from making regular shipments any longer, after some 40 years without problems.

Like so many things in life, the simple and straightforward has now become complicated and expensive!

I fitted some to my CB750 a few years ago and, as the carburettors were already off for reconditioning it was an easy job. I don't think that they could be fitted without removal from the lifting bar assembly though.

A wipe over with a cloth and ACF50 does the job for mine, repeated every couple of months.

I had one of those in 1970 as my first bike, same colour too!

Mine was, from memory registered RUY439F.

I managed a few miles on the CB750 and the BMW this afternoon.

15c and dry roads, though damp was in the air. Anyway, it was good to be out again after nearly three weeks with no riding due to rain, frost and fog!

CB750 / Re: CB750 Foot Peg Location

My 1972 K2 has the right footrest further forward than the left, when viewed from above.

I've noticed it before and compared it with others, all seem to be the same.

I'm 25 miles from Norwich with a CB750 K2, let me know if you'd like to meet at some point.
