CB350/400 / Fitting the headgasket question again?
« on: September 23, 2021, 05:33:11 PM »
Having trawled through 40 pages of previous CB400 posts I have failed to find previous discussions about fitting new gaskets - to Goo or not to Goo that is the question - then it's what Goo?

In the past (mainly on cars) I have just greased a new gasket on both sides and fitted them what's the best way?

CB350/400 / Do folk here Anneal Copper head washers?
« on: September 22, 2021, 06:32:53 PM »
Just wondering if it's worth me heating up my copper cylinder head washers to Anneal them or is this an extinct practice?

CB350/400 / Why did Honda use dome headed nuts on cylinder heads?
« on: September 21, 2021, 07:21:32 PM »
Whilst cleaning up my cylinder head nuts I wondered why use dome headed nuts when you can't see them - why not just use a full nut?

CB350/400 / Cam chain guides question?
« on: September 20, 2021, 11:15:46 PM »
When is it best to fit the cam chain guides, before you fit the cylinder head or afterwards?

In NJ's rebuild they appear to be in place before fitting the cylinder head - I guess it's easier to put them in position at this stage as presumably you can use a torch to ensure they are fitted correctly at the bottom end?.

305
I was looking at NJ's project rebuild of her 400 engine (essential revision/homework) - I can see an extra O ring between the cylinder block and the crankcasing - not sure if it's just the one side (left hand No: cylinder side in photo) or both. I assume it's the oil feeds to the cylinder heads so both sides need a ring?

I respect Triggers workmanship so presumably most folk here do this on a rebuild?

As my cylinder head is not yet in place for a couple of weeks I'm minded to do the Trigger upgrade- does it matter if the seal sits on top or underneath the casing gasket?
Is it necessary to alter the gasket hole to accomodate the ring or does it simply add extra compression to the dowel seal?

I assume I can just raise my block a tad to sneak them in - going to need the ring(s) if I do from NJ then?

CB350/400 / Rear indicator earth connections question?
« on: September 13, 2021, 10:14:17 PM »
As you might expect both the earth terminals on my rear indicator brackets/ears are broken off whats the best method to work around this - I can't get enough heat on the bracket to make the solder run to attach a male spade.

1. Drill a small hole in the bracket and bolt on a terminal with a bolt head on the outside so it's not too obvious.

2. As 1 but pop rivet the connection

3. Run an earth from the lamp clamp into a dedicated earth. (You would see the wire)

3. Take the lamp apart and run an earth from the lamp unit.

My lamps are not the originals but the DS type cheaper units.

CB350/400 / Is this a PO's Motad Mix up or what ?
« on: September 12, 2021, 09:34:56 PM »
My main photo storage PC packed up last week - on the external 1TB HD were last years strip down bike pics - that I retrieved yesterday.

Looking at various members photos of the neat 400 four original exhuast pipes got me wondering if Motad did it differently or if the PO when he rushed it's re-assembly get it all wrong.

Before I removed the system I numbered all the pipes at each end - is this the weird pipe arrangement that Motad did or has it been assembled wrongly?

CB350/400 / Speedo & Rev counter lights question on bulbs.
« on: September 12, 2021, 01:00:47 AM »
Looking at my Instrument lights my bulbs are either badly blackened or blown they're 12v 3w so I need to replace them plus  the pilot lamps some 9 units or so in total.

What bulbs do folk here use the DS ones or LED's  any links to good products appreciated?

The last post on this subject I found was in 2016 I think, I know LED's have improved over the last few years so any tales of woe or success welcome.

CB350/400 / Instument/Meter Cushion Seals - not the best design by Honda ?
« on: September 09, 2021, 06:46:45 PM »
I have found my Instrument bracket thought I would see what the actual Speedometer & Rev Counter are like and give them a bit of a clean.

When I removed what look like stainless steel backing covers I found quite a lot of rust on the lower edges of the back of the actual gauges - the seal iteself appears to be some sort of rubber with a sponge type insides to it - nice for holding water to let the back of the steel gauges rust away!

DS only want £15.48 for the replacements that from the photo look more square than round.

Is there an option thats better?

CB350/400 / LHS wiring clip - behind tank mount rubber?
« on: September 09, 2021, 12:08:01 PM »
Item 77 in the frame section of the parts manual 32174-377-000 is this part fitted on UK models ?

DS has them at a hefty £32.40 my bike did not have one fitted might explain why the wiring loom was all over the place on the frame.

CB350/400 / Can anyone identify these items please?
« on: September 08, 2021, 11:05:15 AM »
The big bracket came with my bike in a box of oddments it's not my rear exhuast bracket (I have that) could it have been part of the original system  any ideas please?

The two long bolts might have come from the front end somewhere as they were in a box with my Instrument bracket - obviously not original with the allen key head - they have a ferrule with some broken rubber bits ?

The two in the right of the photo have an odd hole in the ends?

I know I should have taken more photos as I stripped the bike down - at the time I told myself it's obvious - I clearly have not taken into account my Goldfish memory - yes the Castle in the bowl is a surprise every time!

CB350/400 / Headlamp support frame mounting top two points question?
« on: September 08, 2021, 12:16:01 AM »
The two upper rubber mounting points on the headlamp frame do they just bolt from underneath into the top yoke or is there a bolt from the instrument bracket that drops down ?

I failed to take any detailed pics so can't remember how it goes - parts manual does not help - I seem to have a box of nuts & bolts from that area!.
