CB500/550 / Left side handlebar switch question?
« on: August 26, 2023, 06:36:37 PM »
When I replaced the handlebars on my 500K1 I went for the concealed switch wiring look, this has meant replacing my switch gear to suit to avoid a dogs dinner look.

I am some way off connecting up the wiring, the right side switch gear has 7 wires as against 6 in the old switch so there will be a spare I guess.

The left side switch is for a 500 K2 or 400 so it has a Pass switch included but here is the conundrum my new switch has 8 wires as against 11 wires on the old unit! So I have 3 fewer wires but an added function in the Pass switch.

So do I need a different switch or is it possible to make it fit - as an added complication the colours are mostly different?

CB500/550 / 500 left side electric panel.
« on: August 24, 2023, 07:43:01 PM »
The three block connectors that sit on the left side of the panel do not seem to locate as such in the panel frame.

As some of mine had broken lugs I have replaced them with new ones from Kojaycat but they just seem to hang in place. Is this normal?

On a related subject does any one supply the rubber suspension parts for round flasher units?

CB500/550 / Picture sought of right side behind side panel.
« on: August 21, 2023, 07:18:39 PM »
Amongst my many photos that I took when dismantling my 500 I failed to take one of the right side with the side panel removed showing the battery box etc.

Does anyone have a picture I could use for reference purposes please?

CB500/550 / 500 cylinder head nuts ?
« on: August 20, 2023, 05:09:06 PM »
Currently sorting out my boxes of various fasteners from when I removed my cylinder head & top covers. Most of my covers had SS Hex head bolts fitted previously.

In a box I marked Cylinder Head Nuts I have 8 flanged flat face M8 nuts, 2 of M8 chrome domed nuts, 4 of SS M8 nuts, 12 of M8 flat washers.

The manual shows 12 of M8 flat faced flanged nuts (90236-300-000) so the SS nuts were probably a substitute for 4 missing ones - not sure where the domed nuts go as I can't see them in the parts book.

The DS price for the flanged nuts is £2.88  each, looking at alternative nuts on e-bay  it appears some M8 nuts have a larger diameter flange so probably would not fit in the recess.

Are there more sensibly priced nuts available that are suitable to replace the originals ?

Lastly the 6 rubber caps that are glued in place - what is the best adhesive to use for these please ?

Misc / Open / Adrenaline & age does it affect you?
« on: August 10, 2023, 02:59:08 PM »
Even as a teenager I would always feel a slight surge of Adrenaline rush as I prepared to go out on my bike - it would always subside within a few yards of riding off - only returning if I rode too fast or had a rear wheel skid.

As the decades have passed with my bikes being more powerful I have detected a greater apprehension before I ride out - again I usually calmed down within a few yards of riding off.

After a fair gap between parting with my XJ900 (2009) and first riding again on my 400 (2022) I have detected a more severe raising of my anxiety levels - thankfully it does subside after riding a short distance as I ease back into the routine.

Is this me starting to loose my bottle at the age of 75 or just being more aware of the greater impact of injury not just due to more traffic, idiot drivers as well.

CB500/550 / Item 8 in this picture - tongued washer?
« on: August 02, 2023, 06:38:16 PM »
As it was missing on my 500 I am fitting the chain guard that bolts inside the left side chain case cover.

Two M6 bolts hold the protector in place, one has a spring washer, the other has a tongued washer part number 90532-323-000. that is  shown as no longer available.

Is it okay to use a spring washer instead or is the tongued washer an essential locking tab?

Do I need to fabricate a lock washer for this location?

CB500/550 / Starter cable route & alternator wiring.
« on: August 01, 2023, 11:38:30 AM »
I took a photo when I removed my chain cover last year, aside from the missing wiring clip for the alternator wiring the starter cable ran through the top exit hole with the alternator wiring running out of the rear.

The Honda manual shows the starter cable running out of the rear of the chain case & up past the engine mounting spacer & the alternator loom running  through the casing slot so I will follow the manual.

I've  looked in the parts book there does not appear to be a wiring grommet where the alternator wiring passes through the casing  slot - is it worth putting some sort of grommet there for protection?

I was also surprised at how relatively narrow the gap is between the chain sprocket & the clutch push rod.

CB500/550 / How best to remove exhaust studs ?
« on: July 30, 2023, 12:57:58 AM »
When I removed the front pipes on my 500 three of the studs came out with the nuts.- so in an ideal world I would like to replace them with new SS studs.
On examining the remaining five studs I suspect they are not original as they are fully threaded with no unthreaded section.
I have tentatively tried  using the two nuts method to remove one but it has not worked as the nuts just moved up the threads despite being very tight. I am wary of stripping the threads to compound the issue.

Is there a better method of removing them as I do not fancy breaking/or stripping a stud by being cack-handed.

I have a plumbers gas blow torch as a heat source if this might help?

Desperately Seeking!! / Honda Adjuster 22841-266-000
« on: July 27, 2023, 03:17:31 PM »
Well today whist holding the clutch adjuster big screw part in my hand to prize off the old seal I managed to break off /damage  the thin end of the wall where the seal sits.

I can't believe I was so clumsy - I should have set fire to it instead that would have worked - I had no idea how thin it is at the seal end.

Anyone have one to spare/sell?

Part number is 22841-266-000

It is possible I misplaced a part but should there be a thrust washer or shim between the clutch outer basket and the gearbox bearing ?

Is there a previous post covering the correct assembly order  of the clutch operating mechanism thus working out what size shim is needed. I have done some trawling with no joy - lots of posts on various issues but no definitive advice found on best practice.

Thanks in advance.

Misc / Open / Autocar Archive
« on: July 21, 2023, 12:20:01 PM »
Just had an e-mail from Autocar as I share a subscription with my best mate - they have started putting old digital copies on their site that I think you can order - my access is free for a week.

Be great if Bike Magazines do/did the same thing.

A random screen shot from 1973 issue  if it works is shown below - it's not very clear text from a screenshot but you get the drift - extra to download or order the magazine..
