CB500/550 / Item 8 in this picture - tongued washer?
« on: August 02, 2023, 06:38:16 PM »
As it was missing on my 500 I am fitting the chain guard that bolts inside the left side chain case cover.

Two M6 bolts hold the protector in place, one has a spring washer, the other has a tongued washer part number 90532-323-000. that is  shown as no longer available.

Is it okay to use a spring washer instead or is the tongued washer an essential locking tab?

Do I need to fabricate a lock washer for this location?

CB500/550 / Starter cable route & alternator wiring.
« on: August 01, 2023, 11:38:30 AM »
I took a photo when I removed my chain cover last year, aside from the missing wiring clip for the alternator wiring the starter cable ran through the top exit hole with the alternator wiring running out of the rear.

The Honda manual shows the starter cable running out of the rear of the chain case & up past the engine mounting spacer & the alternator loom running  through the casing slot so I will follow the manual.

I've  looked in the parts book there does not appear to be a wiring grommet where the alternator wiring passes through the casing  slot - is it worth putting some sort of grommet there for protection?

I was also surprised at how relatively narrow the gap is between the chain sprocket & the clutch push rod.

CB500/550 / How best to remove exhaust studs ?
« on: July 30, 2023, 12:57:58 AM »
When I removed the front pipes on my 500 three of the studs came out with the nuts.- so in an ideal world I would like to replace them with new SS studs.
On examining the remaining five studs I suspect they are not original as they are fully threaded with no unthreaded section.
I have tentatively tried  using the two nuts method to remove one but it has not worked as the nuts just moved up the threads despite being very tight. I am wary of stripping the threads to compound the issue.

Is there a better method of removing them as I do not fancy breaking/or stripping a stud by being cack-handed.

I have a plumbers gas blow torch as a heat source if this might help?

Desperately Seeking!! / Honda Adjuster 22841-266-000
« on: July 27, 2023, 03:17:31 PM »
Well today whist holding the clutch adjuster big screw part in my hand to prize off the old seal I managed to break off /damage  the thin end of the wall where the seal sits.

I can't believe I was so clumsy - I should have set fire to it instead that would have worked - I had no idea how thin it is at the seal end.

Anyone have one to spare/sell?

Part number is 22841-266-000

It is possible I misplaced a part but should there be a thrust washer or shim between the clutch outer basket and the gearbox bearing ?

Is there a previous post covering the correct assembly order  of the clutch operating mechanism thus working out what size shim is needed. I have done some trawling with no joy - lots of posts on various issues but no definitive advice found on best practice.

Thanks in advance.

Just had an e-mail from Autocar as I share a subscription with my best mate - they have started putting old digital copies on their site that I think you can order - my access is free for a week.

Be great if Bike Magazines do/did the same thing.

A random screen shot from 1973 issue  if it works is shown below - it's not very clear text from a screenshot but you get the drift - extra to download or order the magazine..

CB500/550 / O ring seal question for 500 cylinder bores?
« on: July 20, 2023, 05:42:39 PM »
The four cylinder bore block seals part number 91304-286-00 are shown in the parts book as 61.8 x 2 mm.

I have a set in my engine gasket set that fit nicely - they are black - on checking my disassembly photos the originals were a sort of orange/light brown colour.

Is this due to an upgrade in the materials used or ought they to be orange?

CB500/550 / 500 alternator stator screws - five out of six are solid.
« on: July 10, 2023, 01:47:11 PM »
At some point I need to shine up the left side alternator cover/housing - clearly makes sense to remove the alternator stator for the polishing job - only one screw has come out so far.

Presently soaking stuff with penetrating oil - might need to get my young friend Marco to see if he can shift them - he talks about cutting a cross with his Dremel tool the using a screw driver that you can put a spanner on.

The three inner JIS heads have had some straight impact with a big Honda T Bar - that shifted one - drilling out does not look like an option as the screw shaft  is not accessible. Outer three might be okay to drill the heads out as a last resort.

Is there a way that works in my limited tool workshop?

Misc / Open / Painting Cylinder Blocks - best methods?
« on: July 09, 2023, 01:10:29 PM »
My recently rebored cylinder block has been cleaned up externally with Petrol then thinners with some wire brushing to remove loose paint etc.

I think I gave it a coat of spray paint a few moths ago honestly can't remember - clearly not properly as when the block is inverted the fins do not look as though any fresh paint has reached them.

My first thought was it might be best to use a small brush and hand paint all the fins on both sides before applying a spray finish - obviously hard to spray far enough inside without applying too much paint to the outer edges.

Not going to go down the Ceracoat type route  - any painting tips welcome.

Desperately Seeking!! / CB500 neutral switch stator needed.
« on: July 08, 2023, 11:05:00 AM »
If it was just the contact tip I could potentially solder in a new contact - mine has been cut back in the past  & bent to make contact.

Part number is 35752-323-000 Stator none at CSML - tried a few places - no joy.

Anyone have one to spare either good complete or that just needs the tip replacing?

Thanks Ted

CB500/550 / 500 oil guide plate position sought.
« on: July 06, 2023, 10:49:19 AM »
I've looked in my Manual & the Honda one in Alladin's cave plus some service bulletins - can't find a photo of where the plate is bolted to the bearing retainer plate.

Only two bolts so is it the bottom Hex bolt ?- my dismantling  photo shows a Hex bolt that has been changed in the distant past.
New part is arriving from DS in about a week.

A bit of an update about the two powder coater I have used locally.

1. For my 400 I used Langley Powder Coater - so far no issues with my frame after 2 years - the coating was a tad thicker than I would have liked but at the price the finish was excellent. Done during Covid -  cost £155.

2. For my 500 I used RPT Engineering near Alfreton - the finish was excellent at the time being nothing like as thick as on my 400.  cost £190.
Sadly the underside of the rear of the frame now has some corrosion breaking through - my plan atm is to apply some black Hammarite as the area is well hidden but I will know it is there.

Why did I change - primarily due to price as Langley Coater wanted me to get the frame specially dipped elsewhere before they would touch it as it had been previously coated 20 years or so ago.  Total cost was estimated at around £350 in total.

Misc / Open / Looking for something that does not exist again!
« on: July 02, 2023, 07:47:41 PM »
So today in preparation for fitting the engine case into the frame next week I looked for the bolts that hold the engine into place at the frame bottom.
I found two nice long shafts - one fitted nicely into the lower rear of the frame but the other was too large a diameter.

I am now fixated on looking for a thinner long bolt - I find one but it is too short. After checking my parts boxes contents list I failed to find the item listed anywhere.
I now check every box on my shelves A-Q to no avail - check them all again more thoroughly a couple of hours later - ziltch.

Look in the parts book - yep it ain't a long bolt like the I was expecting but two M10 x 80 bolts that I have .......durrrrr.

Misc / Open / 400 & 500 Torque settings.
« on: June 29, 2023, 06:16:40 PM »
Just been looking up the torque values for the 8mm & 6 mm crank case bolts for my 500.

Could be lost in translation/conversion - it seems that they changed  the values down wards for the 8mm bolts & upwards for the 6mm ones between the 400/500 engines?
