CB500/550 / Crankcase Dowel Pins question.
« on: June 20, 2023, 03:44:05 PM »
The two dowel pins that fit in the crankcase halves - mine are both what I would describe as a solid slug type not the hollow tube type like my 400 was.

I have some spare hollow types is one any better than the other?

Misc / Open / I.o.M TT viewing.
« on: June 09, 2023, 04:46:58 PM »
As I'm forced to rest in the hope of fixing my back pain started today by watching some of this year's TT on ITVX. Watched Michael Dunlop in the Superbike Race.

Just one word mental - I'm on edge watching it.👍👍👍

Just removed the circlip to check the primary drive cushions - they are very hard so I intend to replace them when my parts arrive from DS.

When I dismantled the primary drive it came out like in the picture when I drifted out one bearing, the second  bearing  is still on the shaft.

What is the best way to re-assemble this when I eventually fasten up the crank cases?

CB500/550 / 500 gearbox shift drum guide - modification ?
« on: May 20, 2023, 11:51:09 PM »
I thought I had mislaid the shift drum guide  spring & ball even though I'm pretty sure mine did not have either.
Looking in the manual it looks like they modified the system for some reason.
Only one selector drum is listed that strikes me as strange as there are two designs of drum guide.

Should I be looking at changing anything whilst it is still in bits?

CB500/550 / 500 oil guide B
« on: May 19, 2023, 01:11:24 PM »
The oil guide is a bit out of shape at the end but otherwise seems useable - the earlier type 11203-323-000 is available but priced at a hefty £30.85 to order from DS.

My later engine number (CB500E-2010986) should have 11203-323-010 that appears to be  no longer available.
TBH I do not know what part I have it was retained in the old engine casing by the threaded bolt - manual shows a self taper 5x16 - my casing does not have a 5 mm thread so intend to fit  the correct  taper screw.

The guide looks as though it diverts oil to the main shaft needle roller bearing. Will I be okay to re-fit the oil guide - if not would the earlier part number fit?

CB500/550 / 500 Kick start assembly.
« on: May 19, 2023, 12:54:31 PM »
I've just assembled the kick start parts in the lower casing - pretty sure I have all the springs & washers in the right order on the inside section - the shaft seems to have plenty of fore & aft movement. With the outer return spring in place there is no tension as such is this right?

Clearly worth getting it right before the casing go together as doing it via the sump would need the dexterity of a Gynaecologist.

CB500/550 / Is this typical of older spoked wheels?
« on: May 18, 2023, 04:53:56 PM »
Today I cut the spokes out of the old wheels with my mates  angle grinder - point of no return - I will now  need to have them rebuilt in the colour of my choice - not Nut Brown not available - might treat myself to Gold Anodised Alloys - undecided atm. I have plenty of time to save up and keep CWC in business.  ;D ;D ;D

The front hub was pretty much as it should be - the rear hub had a number of spoke rub marks on both sides of the hub.
What causes this to happen?

The two bearing half rings that sit in the grooves for the output shaft & main shaft have what looks like a rebate machined into them - at first I thought it was a wear mark on the 57 mm part - on the smaller 52 mm part it looks too perfect.
Not mentioned in my Haynes manual - did a quick site search - failed to find anything.

So which way round do they fit please?

So I spotted a scratched 3 on a selector fork so by deduction & looking at my pics fitted the left fork then middle fork etc in place.

When I checked my photos taken before I removed the shaft the odd casting mark on the right hand fork was now on the left.
I should have recorded the casting numbers but didn't. I'm assuming that the two outer selector forks are different
So removed the selector forks & tried again so the fork positions tally with my original picture. Not sure if there is a way of telling the difference between forks 1 & 3.
Not tried to fit a gear shaft yet as I don't want to get ahead of myself or damage anything.

Does the photo of my selector forks taken from the rear of the upside down casing look correct?
I used the orientation of the clips as per the Haynes manual.

Checked the parts book the K1 appears to have two right selector forks for the K1 ???

CB500/550 / Where does this fit ?
« on: May 15, 2023, 04:20:43 PM »
Just starting to clean up some gearbox internals ready for assembling the gear selector drum when in a small Easy-Seal bag was this small circlip in with a couple of gallery plug ends.

No idea ATM where it fits ? :-\ :-\ :-\

CB500/550 / Rear bearing retainer question.
« on: May 15, 2023, 12:36:40 PM »
I know about the the thread being a left hand one on the rear wheel bearing retainer  - is there any staking as well or is the LH thread all it needs to stay in place?

CB500/550 / 500 rear wheel position looks off center ?
« on: May 13, 2023, 08:27:59 PM »
Although there is only my frame on the bike stand with the rear wheel in place without the rear drive gear fitted or any brake shoes in the hub the rear wheel sits well off the center line with the two chain adjuster roughly at the same mark.

Am I right in thinking that there is more clearance between the wheel rim & the rear swing arm to allow for the drive chain?

The line from the center of the tyre tread is to the right of the center line of the top of the frame where the mudguard bolts. It looks to be a good half an inch to the right.  This difference is also reflected in the distance between the dampers & the tyre edges.

I'm a bit stumped the rear wheel is a 185 x19 that was on the bike I have fitted SS rear spacers that are the same length as the ones that came off.

Amended since original post rims are 185 x 18.

CB500/550 / Front wheel bearing retainer ring question?
« on: May 13, 2023, 12:48:47 PM »
Might seem an odd question but is the thread of the front hub bearing retainer on a 500 the same thread as the 400?

I am aware that the slots for the wheel bearing  removal tool are a different spacing on the 400 & 500's.

CB500/550 / The 500 lack of multiple fuses is there a cure ?
« on: May 10, 2023, 07:38:36 PM »
Reading the problems that Rich & Julie have had with 500 looms is making me re-think my wiring when I get to that stage.
I will be inspecting my existing loom that did work everything last year when I re-do some of the taping/insulation.

Fitting a new loom is clearly not always a long term fix - one fuse sounds less than ideal - Roo's Motogadget box of tricks looks too complicated for me so am thinking is there another way forward?

Is it possible to use a later Honda Loom from another model that with the appropriate fuse box will work or could fuses be added to the existing loom in a tidy way?

CB500/550 / Cb500 Spedo wheel drive oil seals part numbers?
« on: May 03, 2023, 09:07:56 PM »
I can't seem to find  part numbers for the two oil seals in the spedo drive unit.

The larger seal is NOK marked  AE 1967E with no size  the smaller seal at the drive output end is marked Ars 13  50 or SO  4,8  & 4.
Does anyone know part numbers & a source please?

Update: I think the larger seal might be the same as for my 400 - OS 34 x 48 x 7 R32 double lipped seal - not expensive.
