Yes those Brown ones look really shiney compared to mine that are a slightly duller finsh as well as a different shade of brown - might be NGK make different quality caps for different markets. As Bryan fitted mine I suspect they are the real McCoy. PXL_20240415_145642823 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr

My 400 came with new looking brown coloured NGK resistor type caps already fitted - they are substantial with the NGK moulded into the cap in brown. Two straight, two angled.
Those black ones look fake to me as the branding does not look right somehow - see how different they are to the DS ones in their photo. They look more like car ones with the cheap white paint on the logo.
The genuine NGK ones are quite expensive iirc.
If you look at the DS ones although in Black the NGK markings are like mine cast into the moulding.

I see what you mean about grotty - I would be minded to try as you said with the new m/cylinder in place. If you do a search on here from the search box at the top there are other ways to force out the piston involving a grease gun.

Does your bottom mount have a threaded plate attached or is it a nut & bolt fitting?

Are you talking about fitting washer at the top mount for alignment or the lower fitting where it clamps to the swing arm? I had to do some spacing at the top using some washers a member (allankelly1) made for me in SS.

Would a difference in float height explain this?

The caps just screw into the HT leads if you have the Caps with a screw in fitting like the originals. this link is for the ones I purchased just realised you are looking at the same item. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151925589049Theses were mine plenty of HT length so you can fit them easily, looks like the same supplier except the name Hendler no longer shown. .

Good point DR I had to switch the polarity as well to suit the negative earth - can't remeber if I had to change any bullet connectors.

I found some similar ones on e-bay for my 500 they work just fine except the distance between the mounting points was about 5-10 mm shorter. I just fitted a shorort link bracket to make them fit - mine were branded as Hendler from a firm near Uttoxter, Staffs.

Is that a genuine 400 rear damper you have found?
