Lovely looking bike there, great job Dave. Being a first time restorer of a Jap bike and having spent a lot on new tools, it makes me feel better that as a recent restorer of a British bike, you suggest buying a lathe! ;)

Tidy looking bike there, welcome to the forum.

This was my first visit to Crich and I would definitely recommend it for the number of bikes on display and the location at the tramway museum. Also it was great to meet some of the members of this forum. Only one photo, I really can't add much to those taken by Julie! [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Thanks for the help people, this time around I set the timing fine and confirmed with strobe that the advance mechanism is also working as it should.

CB350/400 / Setting the timing
« on: June 27, 2022, 07:16:15 PM »
After 600 miles since rebuild I decided to check the timing, which I found was a little bit out. The bike is running well. Well it’s fair to say getting it spot on has had me baffled, you know the feeling that you have completely lost your marbles baffled. I simply couldn’t get both sets of points timed, I seem to have run out of range of adjustment. I decided to fit a new set of Tec points I found in my stash. I have now, after many hours, got pretty close, with the points gap set at 12 thou. Currently 2+3 is spot on, but 1+4 are slightly advanced. The main backplate is almost fully CCW and the 2+3 plate is fully CW. This should give me a bit of wiggle room.
Because it is close, and it has made me feel like a novice, I am loath to move it again until after Crich next Sunday which I am very keen to get to.
That said with the conflict between the Haynes and Honda manuals, could someone definitively tell me which way to turn the backplate to advance and retard 1+2, and which way to turn the 2+3 plate to advance and retard the 2+3 points.
Haynes manual says “Turning the back plate clockwise retards the ignition, and vice versa.”
Honda manual says ”Moving the plate to the right will advance the ignition timing and to the left retard the timing.” I am assuming that to the right means clockwise.
After all the adjustments I have made, you would think I would know, but my brain has turned to mush.

Hi Ted, I've attached a link to recent pics of my plugs as I have been going through the process of getting my 400 running after rebuild, as you know. I thought you could compare the look in terms of whether fake or not, as the images can be zoomed in so you get a good look at the plug construction. Pics 1 to 4 show plugs at about 300 miles, and they look lean to me so I've been tweaking airscrews to richen them up. The last image is more recent and shows just one plug, now looking about right, (to me). They all look like that now.

I had 1 cold down pipe, number 2. This was very early on. I suspected carbs, I hadn't really serviced them fully, just a clean and new float valves and o rings. I found an air screw spring missing, and also a lot of gunk came out with carb cleaner spray from all 4 air screw holes. However I suspect the biggest problem was the pilot jets. No 2 was definitely restricted compared to the others. I proved this when using carb cleaner wires on it. OK some will frown but if it's good enough for Alan Millyard it's good enough for me. So pilot jets cleaned, new air screw spring fitted, freebie from Steve Cooper, and No 2 down pipe now hot and running much improved.

Good news Ted. You should leave the exhaust popping and banging as it is a) Badass and b) We'll know it's you arriving at Crich!

CB350/400 / Re: DS Pattern silencer
« on: June 12, 2022, 08:23:07 PM »
I have just recently fitted a DS (Brituro) silencer. I don't understand what you mean by frame loop or captive nuts, that said. here is how I fitted mine. Down pipes and collector bolts fitted first. Gasket where silencer fits to the collector box was too large in diameter so I used 180 grit to reduce it down from memory 38mm to 37mm, or thereabouts. Slightly splayed out the silencer where it has the 2 slots then twisted back and forth onto the collector box. Then connected the silencer bracket, 2 bolts on the silencer and 2 bolts onto the frame. Finally tightened the clip on the silencer/collector box junction. I had previously read threads where others had to reduce the outer diameter of the silencer gasket.

I put mine in twice because the first time I forgot the washer that fits next to the sprocket, as far as I recall. I remember it being a bit fiddly but not that bad. You don't have the tensioners in??? You could also try pulling up on the chain with the sprocket just to eyeball the situation.

« on: June 06, 2022, 10:48:29 AM »
Maybe a 500 or 750, non Honda would be a Yamaha RD 400, reliving the seventies again. Other than that I'm fairly open but I do want something that is fun to ride. I don't have room for another bike yet so I plan to enjoy the 400 over the summer then take a look at what's about.

540 miles done, changed the oil and filter at 500. I've had the plugs out a few times to check the mixture and bit by bit making adjustments to the airscrews. Put a new DS (Brituro) silencer on which I'm very happy with, especially now that the rattling baffle has gone. It did change the mixture though, leaner, so I'm still tweaking. Throttle response is now good with the revs settling back quickly to tickover after revving. I have been up to 7000 rpm, it certainly makes an induction roar when accelerating hard through 6000 rpm, it did bother me at first but I'm getting used to it now! I also had a bit of a misfire which became more noticeable when riding harder, but happily this has completely gone after replacing the plug caps on 2 and 3 with the elusive NGK XD05F's. The search for the next project has begun!
