CB500/550 / tickover problem
« on: August 03, 2013, 08:38:22 PM »
For the life of me I can not get a good reliable tickover on my 500/4. Everything is as standard including exhaust, no air leaks new filter, carbs have been cleaned several times, ultrasonically and carb cleaner plus airline. All service items are spot on, bike runs great in all other respects, pulls away with no flat spots and revs up to the redline no problem. I rebuilt the carbs with a keyster kit and set float hight correctly using a special tool. I have tried substituting the original mixture screws but no change. The best idle is obtained with screws 2 full turns out, more than the workshop manual says. When idling at first it seems ok, then after a few seconds it will falter and stop. It also hangs on to the revs slightly when I rev and return to tickover. Also carbs have been balanced with vacuum gauges. Any tips ?

Tricks & Tips / Postage cost
« on: June 05, 2013, 02:11:05 PM »
Most of us sell bits on Ebay and suchlike, and as metal parts are heavy postage can be expensive. I sold a rear brake plate for a 550k3 and when I took it to the post office they were going to charge me £12 odd to send a £5 item so I would be loosing money. so I did some research and most couriers charge similar amounts, although there are some who charge less but my problem is I am not at home to wait for pickup. Then I discovered a company called Collect plus who use a network of local shops and businesses as drop off points, my nearest is a petrol station at the end of my road! You pay on line and print a label (you can link to your ebay account to get details) then take it to the drop off point, they scan it and give you a receipt, job done, £6.19 up to 5 kilo 3-5 days delivery or slightly more for 2 day. also includes tracking and insurance up to £50. I have sent parcel so hope it all works, if so will send all my heavier parts via this method

CB500/550 / yet another 500
« on: May 19, 2013, 08:36:13 PM »
Well I have done it again, another CB500 four project which came from Birkenhead via ebay. The main reason for buying this one was that it came with a set of original 4/4 exhausts which the seller said were in very good condition, and he was right, they are almost mint! The owner had started the restoration but due to health problems decided to sell. It is a complete bike dismantled, the frame etc has already been powder coated, brand new Hagons, some re-chromed items like the handlebars and rear mudguard and quite a few new parts like all the clamps and rubbers etc for the exhausts. Even the wheels look like they have been rebuilt! I paid £1050 for it, which I think is ok considering all the bits included, some of which will go onto my other bike Pics to follow.

CB500/550 / Fouling plug
« on: May 01, 2013, 06:13:37 PM »
I have a problem with spark plugs. After being stood for a few days without being used my 500/4 is a bit reluctant to start, then only fires on 3 cys, number 2 wont fire. If I remove the plug it is wet and wont spark, a new plug and away it goes! This has happened a few times now, the bike runs great once going, timing spot on, all plugs are new NGKs carbs set and balanced, new filters etc. I am a bit stuck for what to check next?

Other Bikes / First thoughts on my Goldwing
« on: April 08, 2013, 09:42:03 PM »
Well my new (to me) GoldWing arrived today via BLD after its purchase unseen from EBAY. Not quite as good as I hoped, but pretty original to 1975 It needs a bit of work but is roadworthy, taxed and tested. I took it for a ride, it was my first time on a wing and on the whole I liked it, the weight is no problem when riding as it is low down, with big wide bars its like steering the Titanic! Only thing is I can't get it on the centre stand, will have to do some body-building!! My 500 seems small now! All in all I am a happy bunny.

CB500/550 / Prices of 500/4
« on: March 23, 2013, 04:56:18 PM »
Its a strange thing, on ebay last week a 500/4 sold as a non runner, no tax or test although looked pretty clean for a project, and it fetched £1522 which seemed high to me. Yet also on ebay is an original UK bike in good condition with original exhausts, being sold by Hondachrome for £2699 with no takers. Although many of us enjoy the rebuilding of an old wreck, it seems to be cheaper to buy a good one in the first place, my bike stands me at well over £3k, and only has a motad exhaust and is not mint. Compared to the early 750s the 500/550 range seems to be a bit of a bargain! I am looking for another project now, maybe another 500 or a 250k4 if anyone has a reasonably priced one?

CB500/550 / bad tickover on 500/4
« on: March 02, 2013, 06:22:51 PM »
Nice and sunny here in Scuthorpe so had a little ride to warm engine to do final setup. It starts easily and runs ok on higer revs but tickover is erratic, it seems to race for a few seconds when i close the throttle then after a while sometimes will settle down, if i reduce revs with the tickover screw it cuts out. So i did all the usual things, new plugs and points, timing set, checked for air leaks around rubbers etc then adjusted and ballenced carbs. There was an improvement but still not right, also carbs have been ultrasonicly cleaned and rebuilt, any ideas what else to check?

CB500/550 / 500 on 2 cyls
« on: February 03, 2013, 08:11:08 PM »
hi everyone, i tried to start the 500/4 today after a few months in storage but it was very reluctant to fire up and needed a squirt of carb cleaner. But only fired on cyls 1/4 so i replaced points and checked timing, but still no spark.have checked wiring but now suspect the coil, can they just stop working?

CB500/550 / head gasket
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:27:16 PM »
very depressed today, bike was a bit reuctant to start and seemed to be backfiring if i opened the throttle quickly so suspected carbs but on close inspection it is the head gasket, i can feel the air being forced out just below the carbs and there is some oil leaking. I have rebuilt the top end with new gaskets, cleaned everything thoroughly and torqued down correctly using brand new genuine honda nuts and washers. The ony thing is i used a pattern head gasket off Ebay. What is the thinking on this, would i be better off using genuine gasket?

CB500/550 / some last problems
« on: August 19, 2012, 09:19:01 AM »
Still working on last few jobs on the 500/4, carbs to go back on, exhaust, waiting for a few parts to arrive and also the tank to be painted, so getting there! One small problem is the oil strainer in the sump, it seems to be quite loose in its housing, is this normal ? I worry it might rattle about when running. Also is there a proper way to adjust the clutch using the big screw on the l/h engine case cover?
