CB650 / Valve clearance problems
« on: April 19, 2019, 01:50:38 PM »
Hi all,  I finally decided to sort the oil seep from the inspection covers on the 79 CB650z due to the PO having stripped the threads. So 2nd hand cyl head cover bought c/w tappets in place. After tarting it up and fitting it I go to set the clearance. Now I can set cyl 1 ,3 + 4 fine but cyl 2 I just can’t get any movement on either tappet at the respective 1.4 T mark even with the adjuster backed right off. I’m at a bit of a loss as to what’s wrong so any suggestions greatfully received  ???

CB500/550 / Dating help and insurance woes
« on: July 19, 2018, 04:09:22 PM »
Can anyone help... Please! To cut a rather long story short according to my own research my 550
Dates from 1977 BUT carries a 1981 Reg it is a uk bike not an import. I am struggling to insurer it because they can’t find a CB550 from 1981! I have contacted DVLA and explained the situation, they advised me to obtain a dating certificate from honda, send it to them and they could issue an age related plate for it , problem sorted with the added bonus of becoming tax and test exempt. So I contacted Honda UK for a dating certificate and today received a letter back from them to say it has not been possible to identify my vehicle and I should contact the vehicle manufacturer for the certificate. How do I find out where it was made if honda can’t!!
The frame No is CB550K-202766* engine No. CB550-202622*  has anyone out there have any experience of this many thanks. Tosh

CB650 / Over heating
« on: June 21, 2018, 06:13:10 PM »
Hi everyone, finally got the bike down the road after a several year rebuild... yes I know, how long did you say??  It Runs and rides really well but to me the engine seems to get very hot in just 2 or 3 miles. I have no problems starting it from cold or hot and the charging system seems to work fine. It’s running standard 4 into 2 pipes with pod filters and standard jetting. It may just be my imagination but it smells hot hot hot. Anyone got any advice ideas?? Thanks in advance

CB650 / Brake pad retaining spring clip
« on: September 25, 2017, 06:59:52 PM »
Finally got round to fitting new piston and seals in each calliper but I've found that on both sides the wee spring clip that passes through both retaining rods and over the shim are missing. No 3 in the diagram .. I can't find replacements anywhere inc Dave silver! My question is are these vital as I'm assuming they have been missing for many years ?   :-\

CB500/550 / Accelerator pump woes
« on: May 19, 2017, 08:19:37 AM »
Well after 3 carb tear downs and cleans I just can't get the accelerator pump to work..it seems to pump well up through the one way valve in the top of the float bowl when the rod is pushed by hand , you get a good jet of fuel, and running carb cleaner through the little brass jet in the carb body with a syringe results in a jet from each of the four posts but put it all together and you get nothing >:( , I've checked and double checked the actuator arm gap... there appears to be a home made o ring between the float bowl and body in the hole where the valve is but didn't seem to obscure the valve... I'm starting to pull out my hair with this one now, any ideas great fully recived

CB650 / Starting issues
« on: February 24, 2016, 11:31:07 AM »
Hi guys, I'm having major problems getting the bike to fire up, it spins up fine on the starter and try's to fire but just won't catch. Bit of history: when I bought the bike it was starting and running to a point, was leaking fuel from overflow on Carb #3 and it was struggling on any more than 1/4 throttle. the guy I got it from had put pod filters on but not done anything else to the carbs.
What I've done: removed carbs, upped main jets from stock 92's to 120's, given them a bit of a clean (although they were fairly clean inside) sorted stuck float valve on #3, checked float heights which were all over the place so set them to the stock 12.5 mm across the board. The pilot screws were all over the place to ranging from 3 turns to almost all the way out so these were set to the stock 1.5 turns.
I have spark, I'm getting some fuel through, the boots look good, the only thing I can see is a small weep from #4 float bowl which shouldn't stop it starting at least?? Anybody able to share some wisdom  :-\

CB650 / PD51A rebuild kits?
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:16:25 AM »
Hi, do any of you know where to source these from, I seem to be struggling to find any one who stocks the kits for this carb, or is there an alternative, say the 750 for example, it's really  just the gaskets, accelerator pump diaphragm  and o rings I'm in need of, cheers
