Most of them are spammers or web-bots (like Google)

On average, I get 5 or 6 spam registrations per hour: 3,700 in the last 30 days.

Luckily the software spots 99% of them and it's quite rare to have to delete a successful registrant.

There are thousands of people out there (in India etc) who are paid a few $ for each successful forum or website registration.
They will go quiet for a while once registered and then fill your site with links to fake Jimmy Choo shoes and the like. One spammer can past thousands of links an hour.
They do it because Google likes links and the more you can get your links out there on other sites, the higher up the Google search page you will get.

On .net we forgot to check the Gallery comments for a while and discovered 65 pages of spam comments on one of the images - each page had 10 comments and each comment had a couple of hundred links in it. No way we could manually delete them all (one at a time) so Glenn wrote a database script and deleted them in the background.
Lesson learned.

What they don't realise now is that Google actively negatively scores black hat SEO tactics like this with the latest algorithm update. Might have been valid two or three years ago, but directory listings and spammy backlinks are easily flagged and penalised these days (thank god). It's all about good and relevant content these days...
