Last summer I done the NC500 via Harris and Lewis equipped with new Pilot Road 5's on my old Beemer, over 3000 miles round trip and they seemed about half worn after that. So pleased with them.

The roads over here seem mostly better than yours, but the difference is it doesn't piss down with rain much during the summer so that unfortunately increases road surface friction and tyre wear a bit.

Back in the seventies I managed to scrub a TT100 away in 1800 miles on a new Commando, crazy times...

Anyhow your tyre mileages on a CB1300 seem remarkable, keep up the good work.

The amount of miles these classics seem to do these days I doubt the longevity of the tyres is a problem, they'll be cracking with age before they are worn out in most cases.

Aye,
I think that's probably relevant to most folk on this forum, but I still manage around 3000 miles a year and so offer my comments from experience.

Yes but what you failed to say is how long they last, 4000, 6000, 9000, 12000? I can get 12K out of a rear tyre on a 1300 and that's a bloody heavy lump and that's not toddling around either. Even my worst rear tyre a Dunlop lasted 6K, most of these classics won't do that in 5 years.

Personally I don't mind trading off wear for grip, I look at it as if it saves just one off it's paid for itself

Yes,
Sorry about that.
Got 3000 miles from a Roadrider rear and 5000 from a Bridgestone BT45.
Michelin Road Classics have done around 4500 miles so far and still looking good.

Once had 10,000 miles from a rear Michelin Pilot Road on my BMW R1150RT, but that was riding about like a very old grandad. Normally last maybe about 7000 miles.

Hope that helps.

Avon motorcycle tyre factory relocated from UK to Montlucon, France. Maybe to remain in the single EU market?

Roadriders are good but don't last, Bridgestone rears cracked between the tread pattern when half worn.
I'm on Michelin Road Classics now, they look a bit skinny when fitted but the bike feels lighter on roundabouts and tight bends  etc.
Expensive tho...

Yes,
Listed on CMSNL web site as CB750K6 fitment as well.

Martin,
You need to renew the needle jets as well, they are a press fit into the carb body under the emulsion tube you refer to.
Just tap them out with a pin punch from the top.

The needles will be worn as well, when compared to new ones you will see the lower part shiny where it enters the needle jet.

Genuine Honda needle kit 16012 392 004

I change mine at 12-15000 miles, by that time the consumption has gone up and it'll start almost without choke.

Good luck

I once ordered four genuine needle jets kits from CMS, two came in sealed Honda bags and two were supplied in zip lock bags which were not genuine as could be seen by comparison.

Anyhow I complained and was told that they were repackaged because the original bags were damaged.

Aye right...

It can seen from your photos that the tappet cover gasket has been scraped off with something very sharp which may have dislodged particles of alloy into the head.

If the particles are alloy and not metal as you state, then remove them and you're probably good to go, if not then it looks like a winter strip down and inspection is required...

Either way, good luck and Happy New Year.

I can see how the bolt came out if you didn't put locktite on it but I can't fathom out how the dowel got involved in the failure 🤔🤔🤔

Julie, maybe Loctite is something you recommend, but there's no mention of that in the official Honda CB400F shop manual over in Aladdin's cave.
I built a fair few of those Honda engines during my years in the trade and never had fully tightened cam sprocket bolts come loose.

Bit of bad luck for Sean tho, hope he gets it sorted out.

You could try this stuff from Briggs and Stratton.

Pick it up at your local garden machinery shop and save online postage charges.

Announcements / Re: 25th Anniversary

How about printing 'SOHC.CO.UK' using the official Honda badge type face.
Then below print 'Anniversary 1994 - 2024' using the same type face as displayed on the side panel to designate the engine size and the word 'Four'.

Sometimes a clean and simple message on a tee shirt is more effective.

Happy Festive Season

Panels on my F1 were a bit slack, some shrink wrap on the lugs cured that.

I never fill the oil tank to the max when doing an oil change as the engine oil seems to expand in volume when hot.
Instead of the the 3.5 litres stated on the oil tank sticker, 2.7 litres of oil does mine when changing the oil and filter.

When cold mine shows about 85% dipstick level and when up to normal running temp it's about 100% and seldom varies.

But it's been already mentioned that it's no big issue as long as the oil tank level is some where between min and max.
Over filling could cause other problems.

As regards wet sumping mines sometimes does this when parked up over the winter, as a long suffering Commando owner I've a habit of dipping the oil level before each journey...

Hope you manage to iron out the post rebuild issues and enjoy miles of Honda reliability.

Renew the needle jets and needles, that's what cured the sooty plugs on my F1 along with dodgy throttle response.
Although I first wasted cash on new main and idle jets which made no difference whatsoever.

Oh and BTW it's better to use genuine Honda needle jets and needles, after market stuff sometimes gives flat spots when accelerating as the needle profiles are not exact.

Good luck

Skoti.
