CB500/550 / Re: CMS selling pattern parts as genuine
« on: January 11, 2024, 07:42:39 AM »
I once ordered four genuine needle jets kits from CMS, two came in sealed Honda bags and two were supplied in zip lock bags which were not genuine as could be seen by comparison.

Anyhow I complained and was told that they were repackaged because the original bags were damaged.

Aye right...

The Black Bomber Board / Re: Bits of metal found near inlet valve

It can seen from your photos that the tappet cover gasket has been scraped off with something very sharp which may have dislodged particles of alloy into the head.

If the particles are alloy and not metal as you state, then remove them and you're probably good to go, if not then it looks like a winter strip down and inspection is required...

Either way, good luck and Happy New Year.

I can see how the bolt came out if you didn't put locktite on it but I can't fathom out how the dowel got involved in the failure 🤔🤔🤔

Julie, maybe Loctite is something you recommend, but there's no mention of that in the official Honda CB400F shop manual over in Aladdin's cave.
I built a fair few of those Honda engines during my years in the trade and never had fully tightened cam sprocket bolts come loose.

Bit of bad luck for Sean tho, hope he gets it sorted out.

You could try this stuff from Briggs and Stratton.

Pick it up at your local garden machinery shop and save online postage charges.

Announcements / Re: 25th Anniversary
« on: December 23, 2023, 07:31:22 AM »
How about printing 'SOHC.CO.UK' using the official Honda badge type face.
Then below print 'Anniversary 1994 - 2024' using the same type face as displayed on the side panel to designate the engine size and the word 'Four'.

Sometimes a clean and simple message on a tee shirt is more effective.

Happy Festive Season

Panels on my F1 were a bit slack, some shrink wrap on the lugs cured that.

I never fill the oil tank to the max when doing an oil change as the engine oil seems to expand in volume when hot.
Instead of the the 3.5 litres stated on the oil tank sticker, 2.7 litres of oil does mine when changing the oil and filter.

When cold mine shows about 85% dipstick level and when up to normal running temp it's about 100% and seldom varies.

But it's been already mentioned that it's no big issue as long as the oil tank level is some where between min and max.
Over filling could cause other problems.

As regards wet sumping mines sometimes does this when parked up over the winter, as a long suffering Commando owner I've a habit of dipping the oil level before each journey...

Hope you manage to iron out the post rebuild issues and enjoy miles of Honda reliability.

Renew the needle jets and needles, that's what cured the sooty plugs on my F1 along with dodgy throttle response.
Although I first wasted cash on new main and idle jets which made no difference whatsoever.

Oh and BTW it's better to use genuine Honda needle jets and needles, after market stuff sometimes gives flat spots when accelerating as the needle profiles are not exact.

Good luck

Defo change the oil and also would recommend dropping the sump plate to inspect the oil pump strainer gauze for particles of surplus gasket sealer etc.
If you find lots of stuff in there then pull the oil filter for inspection as well.
With Honda engines cleanliness is next to godliness!

Good luck

Project Board / Re: My 750F2 project.

Headlight assembly should be rubber mounted just like the original F2 was.
Rubber or soft plastic sleeve between your headlight bracket clamps and fork legs may suffice.

If not you may have problems with blown headlight bulbs.

I found this out by doing the same as you've done, mounting the brackets directly to the fork legs.

Your project looks good, please keep posting photos.

Good luck

CB750 / Re: Oil feed to clutch cb750k
« on: December 06, 2023, 04:17:03 PM »
Was horrified to discover the PO had cut grooves round the friction surface of the steel clutch pressure plates of my CB750F1.
But as the clutch had been previously working OK I just re-assembled it as is.

Seemed like a severe botch to me, and probably done to help prevent clutch drag perhaps?

Anyhow I'm not advocating this as a cure for clutch drag.
Be good to find out what the proper cure is tho...

CB500/550 / Re: New frame/engine bolts. What type?
« on: November 23, 2023, 08:16:27 AM »
Stainless stuff has not the same strength as normal zinc plated high tensile steel fasteners.
Not ideal for engine, shockers, forks or brakes etc.
But probably ok for other light duty cycle parts.

Anyhow for a show pony it probably won't matter.

Stay safe

Wave washer has a similar effect as a spring washer.

Wave washers get their name because of their wave shape. This distinctive shape produces spring pressure when the wave washer is somewhat compressed. Wave spring washers are suitable for a variety of bearing applications where a small deflection may be required. It is particularly common to use wave washers to take up end play and for the loading of bearing assemblies. You can search through our range using a number of filters, including inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness, free height and loaded height.

Was it a pattern tacho cable?
If so does does the alloy cable end that fits into the cam cover measure the same as the genuine Honda cable end?
