CB500/550 / Re: Pics of the project - finally fully complete

Great individualistic features. Like the pipes, switches, headlamp mounts. The seat is almost invisible, how was it on your longest ride so far? Makes some of us look a bit samey trying to recreate 1974. But just shows we are all sorts, but love bikes.

Think that wiring may not pass building regs as I thought it must run run either vertical or horizontal from switches or junctions. Looks like the vertical wiring to the 13A sockets on the left is not in line with the sockets and the wiring to the hood is diagonal.

Saw the mention of the SS125 in the threads above and thought I would post a pic of my SS125. At the time I was only in love with it for 6 months and traded it for a Tiger 90. It's blue like the one in DS museum. Paid £189 (got £25 for my C110) for it when still 16 and rode it straight down to Dover as I remember. They say kid's grow up younger these days. I don't think so.
And I've never been to Suffolk, but feel a trip coming on.

CB500/550 / DK Bike
« on: June 30, 2016, 08:14:10 PM »
Just watched this countdown on the DK site. Seems cheap to me. DK seem to have reached saturation point. I never bought any of my bikes to make any money, but also didn't  expect such a drop. I think I paid about about £1100 in 2002 for my CB500 and have spent approaching £2k on it over the years, paintwork, exhausts, tyres, etc

Just a reminder of a topic that I,m sure has been covered a number of times.
As my 500 has become increasingly difficult to start over the last few months, I thought to get on with something useful yesterday I would investigate. It is fitted with Piranha ignition (remember them) that I originally bought for a Guzzi and then transferred to a Z650.
The spark looked OK, but when measuring the voltage at the coils it was nearly a volt down. A quick root around the shed revealed an old relay bought for some extra lights fitted to something years ago. Wiring this to switch power direct to the ignition system has made all the difference. Starts on the button.

CB500/550 / Re: Cam Cover Sealing Washers

Thanks for that.
And strangely both sets include the 8off 10x1.6mm O rings that go under the valve guides. I've never replaced them. Should I?

CB500/550 / Cam Cover Sealing Washers
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:21:22 AM »
I have bought two different manufacturer top end gasket sets for my two 550s and both are missing the 6off "lozenge" rubber sealing washers that cover the access to the head nuts. Is this normal as they include the large wavy O ring for the cover itself? It is annoying as the they seem to be over £3 each, unless somebody knows otherwise.
Should they always be replaced?
I have some from a set from a 500 that I did a dozen years ago and I'm sure they were included. At least I'm OK for one bike.
Thanks

Thanks for posting this. Most of us with only one or two (or three) bikes only come to this problem rarely and can make mistakes at the first attempt. The pictures give me the confidence to get on with mine.

The downpipes on my F are pretty good and I had designs on getting the old silencer repaired or modifying another to suit.
DS ore OOS of the gasket (packing) that goes between the two. It is a simple tube, but does any body know what material it is or I should use.

CB500/550 / Re: Spare coils cb550?
« on: June 16, 2016, 10:49:11 PM »
This ones for Ash I think. Do you have a guide for fitting new HT leads to coils as my leads on the F are hard and cracking? The leads are formed to a tight bend at the exit of the coils and I am afraid to move them here. Joining pieces for HT leads seem pricey.

Plus, has anyone used Z650 coils or similar as they seem to have replaceable leads and will they fit if I make new mounting brackets? I still have points ignition.
Thanks

Wow Spitfire at least you are making me feel young. I started on £20 a week and the avatar pic is my CB500 that I paid I think £720 in August 74 from HGB in Harrow.

I sorted out my old mags a while ago and I also have both of these and was reading through the rebuild this afternoon!
With horror I came to the picture of the clutch on P44 and read the line about the orientation of the top clutch plate. It is also in bold in the shop manual. I've just bolted up my 550F engine. I have no manual for the 550.

But I did have tucked away a clutch assy from a 550K1 and one from for a K3. Both do not seem to have the swept grooves in the top friction plate. Presume that the idea was dropped as a waste of money and 550s all have straight cut grooves.
