CB500/550 / Re: Primary Chain + F1 forks

Just my luck.
Lower rear engine mounting 12mm. Ideal for using as slide hammer to withdraw primary shaft.
Swinging arm is 14mm
Rear axle is 18mm
Nothing on bike 16mm that I can fid.
And to cap it all. Yes I was looking at the tool on ebay but thought the 4-way device would be a better investment. David Silver sell an aftermarket one for about £25. It has been OOS for a while and I got fed up with waiting and ordered a load of stuff from him on Monday and did not bother to put it on back order as I thought I could not wait.  Stuff arrived Wednesday and yesterday they tell me the tool is back in stock and they charge £5.85+Vat for dely!!

Looks like David Silver may have had a complete set as seconds and they sold for £684, but only now has nos 1 & 3 left (as seconds).
These are "significantly reduced" so I suppose a full set for under £1k, we have to be grateful.
Anyone have experience of previous aftermarket exhausts?

Thanks Oddjob. I have already made two wooden frames/stands to sit the engines upside down. Have stripped the old spare CB500 engine I have had lying around for years. Haven't attempted to removed the rotor yet though as was looking to find a way round the without the tool, Is it a 16mm x 1.5mm pitch? Can't find anything here.
The actual engine I am re-furbing is for the 550 F1. I think that they are supposed to be slightly less prone to gouging the cases, but even at 31k the chain is making its mark. I think rough running engines can cause this.

I have a set of these in the garage with only one tiny crack to the outside world showing and a couple with loose baffles and can't make up my mind whether to leave them, or sell now and put the cash towards some aftermarket ones when they eventually reappear. I,m sure a few out there are thinking the same.

Thanks, will try Philpots later. But in 40 years I have never seen such a deep gouge out of a fork leg. 6 x 3 mm and at least 1mm deep.
Back on the subject of primary drive. I have ordered the dampers from cmsnl, about £3.70 each. Not sure how you judge if the old rubbers are knackerd, butt thought just their age would do it.
Primary chain: following up on the ebay advert I have come across this Kawasaki 92057 number at cmsnl. Fits the z400J (4 cylinder) that was sold in the UKin the early 80s, the Z550 Zephyr from much later and a few other kwackers. Marked as CHAIN,#63-139X50L

Obviously too much time on my hands, semi retired and B cold in the garage.

What do you think??
When do we get to 2016?

Thanks for all this.
Now I am told the primary chain he has is also ok for a Kawasaki GPZ550
Some research on ebay showed item 251195052785 (copy and paste in ebay search) which is interesting. Forget the price , but is it true? He lists a whole lot of bikes for same chain.
The forks are a concern however as the F1 stanchions seem like rockin horse.. And according to cmsnl the damper parts are also different. Is there a supply of stanchions out there at reasonable cost. The pitting in the one leg must be a mm deep.

CB500/550 / Primary Chain + F1 forks
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:13:41 PM »
Ok since I was last on here I now have one CB500 (and two engines) and two CB550s, so I hope you all don't get tired of too many questions.
Have been offered a new primary chain for a Kawasaki 1985 ZX750 and been told that it will fit Honda CB550 etc. Would be grateful if anyone has a spec of the Hy-Vo chain? 3/4" pitch i think.

Secondly, the three bikes I have all have different forks. Stanchions on my F1 are pretty much shot. Very deep pitting and more water than oil ran out of the fork leg!  Anyone know how they differ from the later K3 and if you can mod between the two?

Thanks to one and all.
Hope you like the pic. It is my brand new CB500, Aug 74.

New Member Introductions / CB500 new oldbe
« on: October 12, 2015, 12:07:51 PM »
Hello all,
Had a new CB500 in 1974 and hopefully have attached a picture.... as I'm hopeless at the social networking side. More oil and dirt and in the garage sort.
Semi retired now and have a 500/4 for the last 12 years (lots of money spent and still with a few engine issues) mostly standing in the corner of my garage. Have some spares also.
Never stopped biking (except winters) and use an ER6N for motorcycle transport. (am I allowed to mention a Kawasaki). Had Z650s for a long while, but as a shorty/weakling I have decided to revisit CB500s as they were my first love. (don't tell the wife). Looking for another bike for my lad also.
Great site of like minded people working together.
Roll on summer,
Phil

CB500/550 / Handlebar Switches
« on: October 11, 2015, 05:05:55 PM »
New here and apologies if this has been covered in the past. I have a 74 CB500 for the last 12 years. Will post an introduction tomorrow, but meantime:
At that time I was broke and spent minimal money and used some switches from a later CB550 (I think). They have the entry for the clutch cut out switch and the integral dip switch on the LHS. But I think it should have just indicators/horn/pass on that side and kill/start/lights with P, L, H on the RHS. UK(europe) only. Does anyone know of any available? Thanks.
