Title: SECURITY DEVICES FOR BIKES WITH SPOKED WHEELS
Post by: Nurse Julie on February 07, 2019, 03:58:42 PM
Does anyone have a good device or a good way of securing their bike?
I always put the steering lock on when I'm parked up away from home and I also carry a really thick chain with hefty padlock if i'm going to park up in a dodgy area, which I put through the wheel. I also chain it, through the wheel, to whatever bike Trig is riding if we are out on two bikes. I'm just wondering if anyone has found a small, compact device that can be used, instead of me carrying the chain that is so heavy, I think it could be used as an anchor chain on HMS Ark Royal  ;D ;D ;D
Thoughts and advice please
Ta

My wifes bike came with a U shaped device that looked like a pipe for brace, but turn a key and you can pull out a heavy cable lock that you can feed through the wheel and lock into the other end of the u shaped pipe. Excellent bit of kit, ok pro thieves would break it pdq, but the casual opportunist will be put off. I also use an alarm that has proved successful at deterring a few tamperers who couldn't resist meddling with my machine st 2am on a Saturday morning on their way back from the pub. It was pretty low current drain and is activated by a tiny key fob remote, so way more convenient than a chain which makes it easier to use - I found a whacking great chain so cumbersome I sometimes found myself not bothering to use it.

Oxford HD mini shackle disc lock ----or something like that.

BUT you have to temember to remove it from disc BEFORE trying to ride off!!

I have used an Abus 'U' lock on my VFR750 since 1997 and it's been brilliant. Don't know where you would store it on yours though?

Like this one but make sure it's long and wide enough to go through the front wheel and forks:

I use an Oxford u-lock. It's not too large but fits spoked wheels ok. I also have an bag that clips onto the sear (open the seat and the straps go round / underneath it - Useful for small shopping and the u-lock slides under it when I'm riding.

A quality padlock through the back sprocket tends to hinder theft, and fits in your pocket

Thanks for your replies. I think it will go for one of those U locks. I can sew an extra pocket on the inside of my jacket to keep it in as i will then have it with me whatever bike i decide to ride on a given day.

That is a really bad idea Nursey! A mate of mine lost his spleen as a result of having  a can of beer in the inside pocket of his jacket when he got knocked off it. A can of beer is small and relatively soft. Absolutely terrifying to thi k what a U lock would do to your body if the worst happened.

I hear you Mr Hairy and I should know better than having it inside my jacket really. I will think of somewhere more suitable 😀😀😀
