CB350/400 / Piston Ring Query

Hi All

I received a few new sets of Standard Piston rings and was looking to determine their Orientation.

The top and 2nd ring have both got a Capital R which I assume is Riken. All OK

The challenge is which is the top ring and which is second. I have looked at all the guides and think the following

image 516 and 515 are of both rings with an R to be faced upwards

image 514 and 513 are the same ring from either side of the ring. I think this is top ring. It also looks lighter than the other ring...

Image 512 is the second ring I think but seems to have 90 degree sides.... IS That right..

CB350/400 / CB400f Engine rebuild - no rush - in my shed since 2015

Hi All

In 2015 i picked up an old CB400f 1976 with great intentions, now 5 years later, having dismantled it, cataloged the parts and stored it, I have started to relook at rebuilding same. I did buy a tensioner bolt for fitting later...

Bike has a chequered history so not able to verify much. 36K on the clock. I noticed that the clutch cover at some time had an impact but was duly fixed by PO with some epoxy metal filler. (I have since found a replacement) I managed to get the bike going (clutch overhaul, brakes overhaul, oil change/filter/plugs and patched up the exhaust)and took if for a spin - it was a joy. All that in 2015.

After that started to take apart and document each piece with Photos....My first shock was when I took off the oil sump and found what looked like pieces of the clutch casing see pic below - no doubt from a previous mishap.

Have started to take out the boxes from storage, but have been looking at the camshaft and notice some pitting etc on the CAMS.

Would be great to get some feedback and thoughts on the condition.

I guess the oil changes were not as regular as should be....

Hi All,

Been a viewer here on and off for the last couple of years, when i bought my tattered CB400f in 2015. I rode it for 1 short trip having serviced the clutch and the brakes...

I cataloged and photo'd the customary take apart ceremony and it has sat in boxes, numerous boxes since that time. Family and other commitments have taken priority but am now getting the pinch to start this rebuild.

I also have a R1200rt for 2 up riding with the missus....
