It's a pressurised container Roo, I'm not sure they'd allow that.

Can't remember ever seeing that on a 550 Dave.

Top job that Paul, well done. Like the colour scheme, something about gunmetal that just does it for me.

I did think you pulled them out TBH BUT I wasn't about to say grip them with pliers etc as it sounded a little brutal to me and likely to mark the outer part.

Glad to see my memory was right about the air screws, exactly as I remembered them, not bad for 40 odd years ago.

Never seen the CBX1000 rubbers so can't comment. All I can say is that the maker of these doesn't do the CBX ones.
I stumbled over those:

They do look alike don't they. I'll try and measure a 500/550 one and see if they are as big, you'd think the CBX would have bigger ones with the extra HP and torque etc

Identification is spot on. Take the mixture/air screws out and make sure they are intact. IIRC they have a really fine needle on the end of them, if you screwed them in too tight it would shear off in the carb body, there is also a spring a washer and a really small oring fitted on it. Spring on first, washer to stop the spring cutting into the oring, then the oring. You may need to fish it out of the hole.

The slow jet looks to be a push in fit, been many many years since I mucked with a set of those carbs so can’t say for sure how it comes out.

In the next few weeks if all goes to plan I'll have in my possession a few sets of these rubbers. I've already sold 3 sets of them and I'm thinking of keeping 2 sets for myself so that will leave just 1 set spare. Anyone interested? not 100% sure of cost yet as we don't know the price of onward posting from Europe where they are made and of course how much it will cost me to send them onward to the buyers but initial sums are leaning toward somewhere between £55-60 a set. That's comparable to the price Max charges for a set for the 400-4 and AFAIK Max has no plans to make these due to the odd shape of them.

To fit them will involve you drilling off the heads of the rivets holding the large gear onto the back of the basket, removing the remains, tapping the towers to 6mm and countersinking the metal plate fitted to the back of the gear. Not hard but not exactly a doddle either.

As these bikes get older the chance of the original rubbers going rock hard increases and that can cause the gear on the back to move back and to, this creates lash in the drive train and will almost certainly shorten the life of the primary chain and it's hub rubbers. It also accounts for some of the noise at tickover. Replacing them should smooth out take off and deceleration in theory if nothing else.

I may buy some more sets in the future providing the person buying them for me in Europe doesn't mind doing it again, however these may be the only 6 sets imported as the maker of them will not post to the UK.

The inside of the basket looks like this when it's apart, just for reference. If you look carefully you can see where the rubbers are splitting at the corners.

First one to say yes on this thread is the winner, no PMs please.

Ted please don't for one second think we say bunkum just because it's you saying it, I've been thinking about that one for a good while now and realised it didn't fit with my experiences, a lot of what's out there on the web is pure rubbish, having a debate about it can be very helpful for solving whether it's good advice or just plain garbage. You won't be the first to repeat something they've read somewhere thinking it sounded true, you certainly won't be the last.

If nothing else it made people hone up on their maths skills.  ;D ;D

If you're still using the 550 air filter yes, otherwise there is unfiltered air going into the engine intake. If you use a 500 air filter then remove the snorkel part inside the airbox and you can leave the pipe unblocked then, it's irrelevant. You may have to put something under the 500 filter as I believe the air filter housing is taller on the 550.

Not really, it was fitted to comply with the US market laws on emissions, mainly for the California market.
