Misc / Open / Re: Is glazing a real risk with idling engines or a myth ?« on: September 01, 2024, 01:49:32 PM »
It’s pretty similar to running in a new bike Dom, but I would give it 350-400m before picking the revs up and holding them a bit more. Rolling on and off and giving it load aids in the process rather than riding about all gingerly so the motor is being taxed but not ‘thraped’ in all the gears.
I’ve not run mine since initial set up for fear of glazing as I wait for the tank and seat etc. soon as they’re back I can get it out there but ll do 400 or so, drop the oil and do another 250m, check the oil and change if feeling frivolous. That’s just me but happy to be corrected. End of the day I haven’t spent this much time in the shed to kill it in the running in process so probably do a little above what’s required but ‘belt and braces’ and all that. I was stuck for space as ever when I did mine but if you think your jig is advanced Johnny, check out the contraption I concocted
Copper pipe screwed to the bench with a machine set square cable tied to it. It’s all I could muster but worked a charm Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 9

I not did it his way as it required no special tools or set up and could do it with what I had in the shed. It turned out to be super simple

Only the fact that if it chips or comes away, you’ll have to do some cunning masking to redo it if the wheels built. I part polished mine, that Kanuba wax is easier to apply than lacquer was my thought train when doing that job.

Go look at Allan Millard’s wheel building video on his you tube, it’s on his Z900 build. Rather than lacing them vertically he does them flat in the vice on the bikes rear spindle. I copied him and found it much easier and you don’t need any special kit etc……. Worth a look, helped me immensely and I’ve done 4 sets now. I had em checked at a vintage bike shop in Chard and he said he couldn’t have done them any better so well chuffed!

No that’s the way to do it, works a treat, while youve got them off, might be handy to check if your float height skills and run some fuel through them to check for leaks, see picture.
Beats taking them on and off! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 14

Good man Ted, that sounds a dream of a first run, that’s nothing to get over, great work mate, still waiting for my seat to be finished as I had an alteration to do on it so had to have it changed.
