Need to replace battery on 500/4, with the standard battery offering 12Ah, yet a quick check suggest that there are other batteries the same size but with greater cranking capacity rating. Any thoughts on the best way to go. I appreciate that it might be false economy, but looking for a cheap option.

I had thought of spending a bit more for MotoBatt (although I know of a few cases where they've failed after 18 months) but even if I went with one of those, is it worth going a little further and getting one with greater cranking power - 14 or more AH?

I use your posted supplier and find them very good.
Can't speak for the motor batt as no experience, but others find them good.
I use from Tayna, their Vata supply for both cars and bikes. They do a AGM type suitable and I've yet to have one fail, either that or their blue-tech type.
They genuinely have very good cranking amp performance in my experience.

The first battery in your link has a small problem if fitting with original cables, the terminals are not tall enough to take the connectors. You will have to drill them out ;)

I have Varta fitted to all of mine and they are good, plenty of cranking power.

If you look at that first paragraph, top right, can that be true? Where the luftwaffe really flying submarines? No wonder they lost ;D
It must be obvious to them in hindsight what they could have done better, I guess :D
Guess their navy was having trouble getting a meschersmidt to run under water too.

Bog standard Yuasa re-fillable lead acid for me they can take the most abuse and can usually be recovered from deep discharge.

+1 on Yuasa, they lasted in general well over 7 years in all my bikes!

I use Motobatt because I love the no maintenance ,and no overspill acid from the overflow,
but,my original only lasted about 30 months ,hopefully my 2nd (CB500) will last longer,and the CB200 will last as well,

Yuasa all the way.
They last and as has been mentioned when on the floor they can be resurrected and take a good charge from very low voltages...
I've always found motobatt ok but when they go of the cliff there is no coming back...
Just my thoughts....and yeah Halfords are often the cheapest and I guess will fill them for you too now acid is outlawed to the general public

Thanks for all the replies, think it's a choice for me to make between a Yuasa or Varta. Have a leaning to Varta, but only on the basis that I'e got one in the car and that's performed well for nigh on 7 years. Having now narrowed it down to two makes, do I go wet or AGM?
Maybe it's more of a car issue (ie without the backup kiskstart option) but still interested in thoughts of going for a higher AH rating than specified?

I go with the higher capacity if it is same sise casing as normal generally.
I came to Varta through same route as you, had original fit on a diesel car that ran 11yrs and over hundred thousand miles before it showed down enough to need changing for reliability. That was an AGM one, which I thought was impressive.
Inadvertently left the park light on my bike (that bit on ignition on mine where you leave the key in Park mode :-[ ) for a couple of days, measured 0.12volts after that and recharged fine. Now four yrs old, Varta AGM they just seem well made.
Buying Yuasa from Half fords, their guarantee are usually well supported from my experience of taking batteries back (non Yuasa) as long as you have receipt. They have Yuasa branded test kit a my local one that tests it on vehicula and gives print out of volts, capacity, cranking amps, alternator output etc, quite useful diagnostic data.

For me Yuasa. They can last some 7 years. When you choose another, pay attention to the terminals! A mistake is easily made and in case you need an extra adapter, there's the risk the PLUS will be too close to and eventually ground to the frame. It's not worth it. And as far as acid, although a new breather tube has been included each time, I never bothered to fit it: the original is still on (stonehard now :D). BTW, you don't need extra Ah at all. If your bike (or any Japanese bike of that era) does not start say within 7 seconds, you might as well stop and look for the cause rightaway because there WILL be one (often the kill switch :D).

Yuasa do 2 different output batteries for another bike I have so check if one for yours is available
